Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Looking for suggestions or example on how you spread (2x2, 3x1, what side the back lines up on)guys name your plays without have a ton of verbage in it . I know the numbers but simple formation names. Trying to keep it simple. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Coach, we have one HS and one middle school in our county (district). In a 2x2 set, we call it "Eagle" (our nickname) if we want to set the back to the right of the QB. If we want to set him to the left we call it "Knight" (the MS nickname). If we are "under" the back is behind the QB. In a 3x1 set, we call our formation with a TE and 2 flankers to one side with a SE on the backside "Ram". The back is set on the TE side. If we want him on the other side we say, "Ram, Weak". The opposite is "Lion". If we want two slots inside of a split end with a SE on the backside we call it, "Rio". The opposite is "Leo". If we want a slot, SE, wing formation, (with a 5 yard split) we call, "Trips Right" or "Trips Left". Our runs are: dart, dart me, counter, trap, zone, wham, shovel pass, option. We run dart to a one technique and zone to a three technique. Say the back is on the left side of the QB (it doesn't matter if it is 2x2 or 3x1) and the one technique is on the right guard. We will block down on the one tech. with the right guard and block out with the right tackle. The left tackle will pull and lead up in B gap on the playside LB. The QB will look at the DE on the left side. If he trails the LT, the QB will pull it and run around the left end. "Dart me" is the same for the OL but the back is on the right side and the QB will definitely pull the ball and follow the LT. "Counter" is the same as "Dart" with the exception of the back is on the right side and takes three steps to his left like he is running to the left side, then stops on his third step, plants and comes back to the right side behind the LT in B gap. Zone is just Zone blocking. "Trap" is an inside trap on the 3 technique. "Wham" is the back leading the QB between down defensive linemen. "Option right" starts with the back on the right side. The QB (shotgun) will attack the DE on the right side. If the De comes to him he pitches. If he comes upfield, he tucks it and runs inside of the DE. "Shovel pass left" starts with the back on the right side. The QB sprints to his left as if to pass. The OL blocks down like option. The back comes under the QB and tucks up inside of the DE. The QB reads it like "option". Hope this helps get you started.
How many formations are you thinking of this late in the season?
To keep it simple, I would run three - 2 x 2; 3 x1 (trips rt); and 3 x 1 (trips lt) and color code them - 2 x 2 = Red; 3 x 1 (lt) Black; and 3 x 1 (rt) Green. The re in Red corresponds to regular, the l in Black corresponds to left, and the r in Green corresponds to right. If you go gun, you just tag the formation with gun, move the QB back to 3 yard and move the TB over behind the guard (QBs blind side unless otherwise needed. Play calling does not change for gun (i.e. Black - 50 - 8434 or Black Gun - 50 - 8434).
If you are still inputting or changing at this time of the year you should keep it as simple as possible.
Zone - BOB blocking (turn shoulders & let the TB pick his hole)
Trap - Classic trap blocking
Counter - Classic trap blocking (just one man outside)
Draw - 50 pass blocking riding the DEs way outside and the receivers running off the DBs
30 - 2 or 3 basic route packages with classic 3 step protection or influence
50 - 2 or 3 basic route packages with classic 5 step protection.
You can tag your ground game with 'you/me' calls to get the QB more involved ('You' call is basic run game giving the rock to the TB. 'Me' call fakes it to the TB and he becomes lead blocker for the QB.
Thanks for the information. I have what I need. I'm just trying to simplify by elimanating some of the verbage. Believe me we have a lot. This is for a JV bunch. Thanks again for your help
