Hey, how are you guys doin. This is my first time here but it already seems to be a great site. I need help on my technique as a d tackle. What can i do to pass rush better and shed drive blocks? I do take pursuit angles toward the ball when it is away from me and i am working better on clogging holes, but my pass rush and shedding of drive blocks needs more work. Any idea on some drills i could do or any advice period?
there's no magic step.....it's all 'boring' fundamentals....
The first step is the small things. 1.Stance - coiled...does your current stance require that you have to 're-gather' your feet? Try a more 'coiled' stance that is compact, that is likely uncomfortable, but one that makes you want to get out of it as fast as possible .....shoulder width, no more than 6" stagger, tail in the air. 2. Start - your 'get off' should be a sharp, short 6" drive step, anything greater, leaves you susceptible to pancaking or re-gathering your base. 3. Hand Placement quick sharp punch to the chest of the blocker INSIDE! Get inside and you'll have the leverage to win 4. Explosion - hip roll, just like a clean or dead lift, you've got to pop your hips forward to BANG! and explode from the ground up (into) with your hands. 5. Extension - once your hands are placed and the hips roll, extension occurs naturally, as you'll bench the blocker away (like a power press).
from the extension you will start a bull-rush (keep feet moving)..... from there, you can use rip, swim, counter, club, etc......
Bottom line, if you're first off the ball, you'll win (or break up the play)....if you're last off the ball, NOTHING you do will really matter as being the FIRST line of defense.
