Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I have two tailbacks that I rotate. They are both physical tough runners. We have been a splitback veer team in the past but because of a dynamic fulback be went to the I this year to run midline and it has been great for us. The fulback and back up fulback are hurt. I have a good sophomore but I am not sure he is ready to start. He has performed well in mop up duty. Part of me feels we can go back to split backs this week and have the two tailbacks in the game at the same time. We still practice the mesh 5 minutes a day for goalline and short yardage. The other choice is go with the soph. Anybody had to make a similar decision?
How long ago were you a veer team? If the offense is full of experienced players who can go back to the split back set then you might be able to do it, but if you havent run split backs in 5 years and you dont have the linemen with the heads to make the switch then dont do it.

I see the two choices is either giving the fullback spot to the sophmore and still rotate the RB's, with this choice your offense won't miss a beat. You just have to get that sophmore confident in his ability. The second choice is going back to the split back with the two RB's who seem to be equally talented and simply adjust the formation and being that the reads are all the same and the O-line should not be affected all that much by the formation you can have the dbl. threat. A third choice would be to simply take the two RB's and place one at fullback and the other at the tailback. You won't miss a step in your I-formation scheme and the dbl. threat is still there. I have run the I-formation veer for nealry 9 years and have found that the FB at times is the most talented of the RB's. The tailback and the QB must have a good rythm and Speed off the corner. But hey "I'm just a Line coach" -Good Luck.
Coach Hawg, thanks for your input. We went with one of the two tailbacks at FB with the sophmore in reserve. We ran for 260yds on teh day in a win. The "New" fulback had 100yds on 14 carries. He is a little light in the pants to break some of the arm tackles but more than made up for it with his speed in the clear. Thanks again.
If he's having trouble with breaking tackles, you might want to widen your line splits a little, especially on midline. He will still get there on time, but the defender will have a little further to go. Might be just enough to force more arm tackles.
