Coach C,
I am actually addressing everyone here, but I'd like your 2 cents Coach. Our team has a very extensive quick passing game. It includes:
Hitch/Seam, All Hitch, Slant/Flat, Slant/Seam, Slant/Wheel, 5-Slant/3-Hitch, Fade/Flat/Choice, and 3-Hitch/7-Corner.
We generally run 3 Step Hitch/7 Yard Corner....or....Fade/Flat/Choice...or...Slant/Seam vs. teams who insist on staying in Cover 2.
Most teams we can force into Cover 3 by putting twins into the boundary and motioning our TB out of the backfield into doubles (we are a base gun 2 RB's, 3 WR's team).
Some teams just stick in cover 2 though, and I'd like to know any better quick passing combos and the specific points you teach to the QB. Our 3 step Hitch/ 7 yard Corner route is very productive for us, especially when accompanied by a quick PA across the QB's face the other way. But, I think there is more we could be doing.
I was thinking a 7 yard In / 1-step Slant (almost like a splitter route: 1 step then right for the opposite uprights) combo might be good, because it would pull the SAM inward, and still keep the playside safety from crushing the 7-yard In.
Please let me know if you've seen any great combos. We play in a conference where most teams have 1.5 times as many kids as we do, so generally we are out athleticized. Don't get me wrong, we have the best QB in NC, and a TB that is small, but ran a 4.36 twice in a row at the shriners combine. Unfortunately, linemen are fair, and the wide receivers really lack top speed to stretch the defense, so they rely on great routes (have a very good coach (not me)), and understanding how to get open. When we play teams who are silly enough to sit in cover 3 it is all over, but many just man-free blitz(still very successful vs. this), or stick in Cover 2.
I know we should really just run when they are in Cover 2, but I am asking for the knowledge... and because our head coach is pass happy.
Thanks for any insight Coach.
A Coach and Lifelong Student,
