Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I am looking for information on the l.a. raiders vertical passing attack. not the current raider teams but say 10 yrs ago. when they had speed burners at wr. they had great success with marc wilson as the qb.
From a standard Split Back Pro set: A) (if going strong) they sent out X-Y-Z on routes of 18 yds or more. Kept both backs in to block. O-Line held like the dickens. QB took 7 steps. B) If going weak - they released X-HB-Z & blocked FB to split end side plus kept TE in. C) Also threw quite a bit from slot - with X & Z releasing to same side, & TE releasing backside - both backs blocked. Routes were corners, posts, ups, deep comebacks, digs, etc. (18 yd breaking point).
Coach - I sent you the John Rauch latters explaining the Raiders pass offense. You should have them by the weekend.
Interesting point that Al Davis had about QB releasing the ball: "QB must learn to hold the ball - quick release doesn't mean getting rid of the ball quickly because of the rush, it means getting rid of it quick when receiver is open. We don't throw the ball on the break or before the break, they throw AFTER the break. That keeps down interceptions". (NOTE: this thinking is NOT in vogue in the NFL today).
NOTE: Deep routes had a breaking point of 20 yds or more, & QB took a deep 7 step drop. They liked 7 man protection (& got away with a LOT of holding).
Coach, that philosophy of holding the football until the receiver makes his break sure is not in vogue in any league that I know about. It may hold down interceptions, but it surely must hold down completions as well, don't you think? How do you time up a passing route with that philosophy? Most Qb coaches 1 Al Davis 0 on this one.

You are 100% correct! "AIRMAN" is a Raider fan, & wanted info on the Al Davis offense. I'm sending him what I have in my files. I certainly don't advocate "holding the ball".
On TIMING routes in the 3 step game (with WR's given a 6 yd breaking point) - the ball HAS to come out WELL before 1.6. In the 5 step game TIMING ROUTES (WR's USUALLY break at 12 yds) - the ball HAS to come out well before 2.2!
The above was scientifically developed by Howard Schnellenberger - a GREAT offensive mind.
yes holding the ball is a tough thing but god there is nothing better then seeing the ball going down the field. the football is meant to be thrown not carried.
"AIRMAN" - the Raider system worked fine for Davis, Rauch, Madden, Flores, etc. It is not the style of pass offense I coach, but there are many ways to skin a cat.
Let me know when the package I sent you with the Rauch letters arrives. Bill
Your 100% about Howard Schnellenberger being an offensive Genius. He sat in our office in 1988 at WM. M. Raines HS in Jacksonville, Fla. and told our FB, Ralph Dawkins he was the best runner on the HS level that he had ever seen, if he would go to Louisville he would have a great career. I was the QB coach at Raines at that time, and OC. I had the privilege of working with him every day, and Coach Schnellenburger was true to his word, Ralph had a stellar career at Louisville. He is the older brother of Brian Dawkins, whom some allude to as the premier Safety in the NFL today. We had him 2 years later.
Airman, not knocking the Raiders, my son played at Clemson with James Trapp, Curtis Whitley, and Chester McGlocton who all signed with the Raiders at the end of the 1992 season. I was coaching in California in 1973 when Tom Flores was the Raider HC. His brother, Bob Flores, owned a restaurant where we would all congregate and watch the Raiders games. Trapp is now a Jaguar, McGlocton is a Chief, and after a solid career with the Panthers, Curtis is out of the League. Like most QB coaches, I was a bit taken aback by that "theory". Thanks Coach, for the info. As always, much appreciated!

I think it would be hard in the nlf today to do what the l.a. raider did because they were undercenter. being we are now into the shotgun throwing the ball deep times up better.
cannot say I remember much about 1973. I was a little football coach at that time. while others were playing I was drawing the plays in the sand and coaching/playing. my h.s. coach in the late 80's would get upset with me. i would find athletic coach mag, which I believe is scholastic coach mag now and I would bring football plays to practice. remember the dolphins/charger playoff game of 83 i believe. I was hooked when I saw the wr latteral the ball to rb tony nathan for a td. we run the hook and latteral everygame. I grewup on marc wilson throwing the ball deep.
I wish I had more gumpion at that time to remember the coaches and contact them. I am not even sure I knew who the oc was at that time or during the marc wilson period. all I know is al davis wants norv turner to run the vertical stretch passing attack again.
oh, I liked the raiders back then but being I live in the midwest I am a packer/colts and sometimes bears fan.
Yes, I bet he does want Norv back! In my opinion, without doubt, the best QB COach in the NFL and has been for a long time! Know all about that shotgun snap vs. under center, as I have run a 5 wide empty gun for a long time before it got popular. I believe I have shared that with you earlier. I liked the Colts under Ditka, DIck Jaron who just lost his job last season, ws our DB Coach and DC in Jacksonville.

Airman, would love to talk with you. I have run it for the past 11 years or more. I have sent several packages around the country and Europe of late. We won the 1994 AFL Super Bowl with it, went 14-2 that year. Put 3 kids right to the NFL off that team, two to the European Football eague. I run other things as well, but I hang my hat my hat on my 5 wides!
