Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I know that some Spread teams use motion to get a defense to reveal it's coverage (ie; is it man free or cover 3)? This is especially true with purist Run & Shoot teams as there is motion on nearly every down. I've noticed a trend away from using motion as much in the spread offense. Schools like Texas Tech & Hawaii are using it sparingly now?
Why is this? Are they getting too many defenders that just are lost in space (messing with their reads & route coversions) instead of somewhat correctly adjusting?
hawaii is still a run and shoot team and they use alot of motion still. I my opinion the further your slots are from the tackle the harder it is to gain the advantage with motion. if you notice in the traditional run and shoot mouse davis style the slots were tight maybe 3yd splits at max. so it was easy to motion a slot over to gain the advantage
now when you spread teams out you get a clear read. the defense can play less games.
Although Hawaii is & always will be a R&S team with June Jones there, they are running alot of non-run & shoot stuff from 2 backs as they even throw a tight end in there at times too. I would agree with you that they still do motion more than most teams, but I'd say only about 1/2 to 1/2 the time (depending on the opponent).
Most run & shoot teams I've seen are usually motioning about 1/3 to all of the time? They'll run some type of return motion (slot ends up in origional position) or motion from trips to double slot as much as possible just to hopefully catch the defense out of position. Now it seems the attitude is shifting towards what you suggested in REALLY spreading things out (including Texas Tech's movement to huge line splits) & play "what you see is what you get"?
I don't know maybe I'm wrong here but I doubt most of these defenses are just playing straight up defensive coverages? I'm sure they're shifting, disguising, & rolling into different coverages. With motion doesn't it help to tip the hand of the defense & take some of the guesswork by the QB?
I am not sure what hawaii game film you are looking at but the stuff I have does not have any tightends in it nor does it have any two back.
the university of houston in the hey day under jenkins did very little motion as well. they linedup in trips or doubles. in trips they would try and run 50% of the time the choice and 50% of the time some form of go or slide. they widened their slots to 5yds as well.
the reason for the spreading of offense in inregards to the virgina tech style defense which was stuffing traditional offense. now we are seeing defenses like the 3-3-5 and 4-2-5 to combat the spread. so you are seeing teams liningup and running right at these defenses. the 3-3-5 is a smoke and mirrors type defense. it is meant to create confusion particularlly is pass protection but you lineup in two te's,1back and 2 wides now you have to bring those ss types rightup on the line playing against large offensive linemen or facing getting the ball stuffed down your throat if you donot.
there is turth that with motion you can get a idea if it is man or zone. in man coverage the guy has to run or the coverage has to rotate. that is the basis behind the run and shoot. motion to oneside and create a overload. however your zoneblitz defenses have created havoc with the tradional run and shoot pass protection. what I donot like about the run and shoot is unless you are in shotgun it really limits you to the side your qb throws. that half roll to the left for a righthanded qb is really tough. in shotgun it works better as you are at a five yd depth and you can just shuffle your feet.
for me personally I would never have my qb undercenter unless I am going quick game. the shotgun expands the vision so much, the qb is not thinking about his footwork and gives you time against the blitz. as for those huge linesplits that is a mouse davis trade mark. if you have any of the mouse davis run and shoot tapes his pass pro tapes talk about the splits. we are talking 3-6 ft splits. just my take on the subject.
as far as defenses playing straightup coverages if you watch tech there goal is to snap the ball within 10 seconds of it being put in play. there theory is lets see how your dbs are in the forth quarter when we have throw the ball 40 times in the first 3 quarters. if you look at their stats they have averaging 62 passes agame and completing 40 of them.
at the high school level most dc's have one run coverage and one pass coverage. postioning is the big key at the high school level for the h.s.defense. if you try some defense which they are not comfortable with you can tell. we are 50% noback and 50% shotgun oneback either trips or doubles. we go five out on just about every play to put the max pressure on the defense. our goal is to become like tx tech and snap the ball quickly.
