Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I am from the 4-4 school of thought and think it might be an easy transition (to the 30). I feel that having more LB types on the field (if you've got them) allows for better schemes against a run dominate schedule. (I also believe that the LB corps is the core of any defense...more LBs = more power)
What type of players are you looking for at each position in this scheme? Is your 30 front 1 true DL with 2 DEs or 3 DL types or Can 4-4 DEs play the 30 with the same responsibilitys? Can I assume that a 3-3-5 is 3 LBs and 5 DBs and a 3-5-3 is 5 LBs and 3 DBs?? Or what??? Please help straighten me out. I would like to learn more about this defense so I can possibly implement it in the next season or two.
our team has won more games this year than in the last 10 years all together! This defense has been great for us - here is how I can describe each position:
NOSEGUARD – “Wrestler” type player; cannot be single blocked by Center ENDS – Agile and athletic MIKE – Strongest LB LOU LB – Best LB (plays against right side of offense) ROB LB – Next best available! FIELD SPUR – Best LB/DB combination player; physical; must be able to play man coverage BOUNDARY SPUR – Less physical than Field Spur; must be able to play man coverage CORNERBACKS - Cover! FREE SAFETY – Best athlete, best player; Quarterbacks the defense
Also, to me, the 3-3-5 and the 3-5-3 is the same thing. Some teams play a few different zone coverages out of it which to me merits the 3-3-5 title. Whether it is either, the two outside force players are a db/lb hybrid who must play both at times. We are a small private school that does not have a lot of pure athletic, tough kids - which is why we flip flop our Spur according to hash mark. This has been a big help for us. Hope this helps.
only difference for us is we use 2 really big guys at nose and mike.
the teams we face, we find it better to have a big-strong nose. one who can not only slant both ways, but also drive a center back when needed. the centers get so used to him slanting, then we just have him smash right through.
at mike we also use a pretty big player. he might even be a dt if we played a 40 front. we may change our minds when he graduates, but he is a dl that can run some. since his main job is 1 of the a gaps, he does very well for us.
up until now, the best place i have found is here on the jc forums. there doesn't seem to be as much info on the 33, the way we'd like to run it. we stack our lb's very tight to the dl. the colleges i've seen run it tend to have their lb's at about 4-5 yards off their dl.
i've found there are some pretty good coaches in here that are very willing to help.
I have some ? about the scheme aspects of things I'm from missouri and teams here are more vertical when it comes to passing and run alot of counters, traps and ISO's so what cov.? and what types of blitz do you think I could use to stop alot of that such thing?? thanks for all your help
Can someone please share the basics to the 3-3 Defense? We took over a program that went from winning to 5 games in 10 years to a 7-3 playoff team in our second season. We need a defense to take on the stronger teams to make the next jump. We have athletes but not the size to take on the next level teams. Please email me with the needed information or the places where I can get it.
