My name is Chris, and I am currently working on getting my degree so I can get into coaching(Which is my passion). I have had many people tell me many different things about the degree I should get, I am currently working on a Secondary Education degree. I just wanted to ask some coaches what degree they have? What degree they think I should get? And what assosiations if any they belong to?(i.e... AAHPERD, ACSM, NASPE etc.)
My suggestion would be this -- anymore, and in most places, a major factor in your ability to land a coaching job is your teaching field. It used to be that alot of districts would simply "make room" for a coach regardless of his area of teaching. For instance, if you were certified to teach History, but there were no History teaching slots available, a principal would get creative and figure out a way to get you in. That appears to be less and less the case. Get certified to teach a subject/subjects that are always needed...i.e. Mathematics..English..Special Ed. If your teacher certification is in P.E. or History...good luck. It's very tough to get a job with those types of certifications at a lot of places. Again, what matters is your subject area that you will be certified to teach..not the actual degree. pdow
If you are like me and you want to teach and coach and do love history then get a degree in secondary ed and social studies. You will be much more marketable than if you were just a history major.

Chris, I just got my certification in Business, which is a field that is starting to open up, but I also got a second certification in Social Studies, because even though it is changing, a lot of head coaches still do teach Social Studies. Therefore on top of my coaching qualifications, I am double certified in 2 areas.
A little advice...........If I were you, I would get a degree in whatever you want, just make sure you minor or double major with math, English, or a hard Science (Chemistry, Biology, or Physics). Here in SoCal, Business, Social Studies (History, Psych, Soc, Economics, Gov't, etc..), Health, Computers, Electives, and PE are in abundance.
With No Child Left Behind (NCLB) you MUST have a valid credential in the subject you teach. Unfortunately, because principals and district credential gurus everywhere shoehorned contracts into wherever they could fit them, there will be a major whiplash in our profession. Those of you that are unaware of NCLB regs, you had better become familiar. Get on the horn to your respective district credential czars and find out where you stand.
Again, whatever your degree is make sure you get enough units in Math, English, and/or a hard Science so that you can get subject matter competency. It might be the difference you need to get your foot in the door.
Chris, nice forum name btw....I am in your same situation right now. I am currently getting my kinesiology degree from ULM with teacher cert. On the same token I was in Computer Science long enough where I am a few classes away from getting a Math and CS teaching minors. EVERYONE I talk to says that I am going to pretty much be able to go anywhere I want.

In wisconsin where i used to coach they were so short a ag and shop teachers that college srs where signing teaching contracts in january of there sr year. if you were either of these and you were willing to move around the state you could have a job esay. then if they found out you were willing to coach it was a plus.
if you go p.e. make sure you can teach health. if you can teach health that is a big bonus.
me I can teach p.e., anatomy, health. I am going back to get my masters in theology.
