I read Homer Rice's book on the triple option, but in high school it is difficult to have a good passing game year in and year out. I like his idea of spreading the defense and running option, but if you don't have a good passer how can you take advantage of his Cincinatti formation?
You cant. I have read the book as well and in my opinion you need a QB who can throw to make it work. I think the reason the formation was made because in his mind the complete offense is the veer and the drop back pass rolled into one, and he feels that he can run a 3 receiver set and still be very sound with the veer.
So look at it this way. If you were lined up against a team who ran veer from a 3 receiver set and they had a QB who couldnt throw it into the ocean from a cruise ship, how much attention would you pay to the pass? I mean I might have 3 guys lined up man to man and stick 8 in the box and tell em to bring it. So the Cincy formation wouldnt mean a thing.
I also do not believe it is difficult to have a good passing game year in and year you in high school football.

It is a formation that Homer Rice came up with when he was at the university of cincinati. Split back, two wides to one side and a se to the other. The linemen had 1 yard splits. The formation allowed them to run the option and drop back passing game. The problem is you must have a decent passing attack to take advantage of the option attack.
We look for a QB who can throw first, run with the ball second. The three wide formation is one of my favorite. If you can three step, bubble, and throw a flat pass to a back, this offense is very tough to stop. It truly does stretch the defense horizontally and leaves you with what amounts to six in the box to stop the veer.
