So I take it you advocate attacking the weakside? That was my initial thought as well. We have been very successful in years past simply being straight-ahead as well, running dives and Iso. I think we have the size and speed advantage. I'm just concerned because it's a front we haven't seen yet this year, and our OL is very used to the standard 40 and 50-looking fronts.
I was also thinking weakside option, but with a dive look as opposed to the speed option. Is there a disadvantage if I do this?
I worked for a guy at the college level that was Buddy Ryan's Defensive Coordinator at Arizona and he ran the 46 at us in practice everyday. He told me he hated running the 46 when he faced an option team simply because of the pressure speed option weak put on the FS. Push crack your split end to the FS and you essentially block two guys with one since the corner is locked on the Split end.
To answer you question regarding the dive option to the split side....You are going to have to determine how to handle the 3 tech. Most 46 teams that are good are tough to block the 3 tech one on one.
If you double the 3 tech then who has ILB?
I think if you want a 3rd play to add to the arsenal this week to think about a dive option that is going outside (without the dive read). Put the FB on the LB and double the 3 tech and pitch off the end. I'd still push crack the FS. If the End crashes for the FB then pitch off the scraping ILB.
If the FS gets too aggressive on the fill for the Pitch. Try and rub the SE off of him on a post and play action the dive option setting up behind the tackle.
I was actually thinking of Fold blocking the 3 tech and the ILB with the T and G for the dive option. I don't want it to be "tripple option", but I'd like to run the dive and the pull and option off the dive, both with fold blocking. That's a great idea using the crack by the X end. We'll take a look at it today. We play this week, and offense is today.
Put your weak tackle on the Linebacker ( He's got the best chance to get his outside shoulder) and let the FB get the 3-technique. Georgia Southern calls this block "Aztec". You can either BASE the 3 with the PSG and chip him with the FB, or release the G inside to the backside backer and let the FB cut the 3-tech's outside knee.
One of the keys to the 46 is getting the backside linebacker involved on the playside. If you get the PSG on him and let the Fb get the 3-tech, if the ball is pitched you have a chance to take it the distance. The free safety will have to pursue hard, exposing him to a cutback by your pitch back.
