This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I hate the counter. In college it killed me (my team) and in my first year as D line coach, the last 2 games we were destroyed by counter. What are some helpful techniques to beat the counter? Thanks in advance.

Ends (after squeezing the hillbilly out of the tackle or tight) must spill (wrong arm) the kick out block then fight back to square...(we call this Spill 1 Box 2) OLB must read the false key in the back field and the true key of pulling linemen to him. then shift his eyes to the closed window created by the squeezing and spilling end and get to outside the end..where the ball carrier is bounced by the spill of the end MLB must then be inside out on the ball carrier and be ready to go over top of OLB
get the ball carrier going east and west...
last tip... OLB on the side the guard and/or tackle pull from yells "PULL" this tips off the MLB and other OLB that linemen are coming their way.. running backs lie,,, but linemen rarely do... good luck
On our team if the De reads the inside release he squeezes the tackle or end down. He knows by his rules that if the stimulis is a down block, a trap/counter is coming and he should wrong arm the trapper. When The DT's reads pull, the Dline knows to collision the FB or Center blocking back. When a down block comes the Dline is taught to look at the FB first as the trapper and if he doesn't show his eye go directly to the guard. Try is to use the center or fb's blocking technique against them. The blocker is taught to get his helmet in front of the Defensive player so trying to get in the pullers hip pocket may not work, especially if he reads the play too late. Try using the collision or push technique and hold your gap responsiblity and position until the play is declared. The push tech. allows the hips to be back and puts your player in a good position to seperate from the blocker and fall inside or back outside on the play. Never have your Dline club across this block. As coach Zoomba Stated before have the OLB yell "Pull, Pull" to tip off the defense. Make sure against a counter OT that you have one player outside the first puller (usually the DE), PSLB between the first and second puller and the BSLB inside the second puller.
some people live on what they know, and some people live for what they don't
coach, Great points playside. We really do a great job backside versus counter. If its a blitz or a d-lineman it does not matter. We get in the hip of the puller. Not up field, in the hip because the fb will try to kick your guy out. That backside man will make a tackle for lose if he does a good job. It does not happen every time but a lot of time. \ PGOLLA
the easiest key i use for my DE's is the FB. in the I formation the FB has to block for the OT that is pulling on the counter. when the end sees the FB go away he must snap his head down the L.O.S. and see the OG coming at him, he must attack the trapper or trap the trapper/wrong-arm/spill-it's all the same. First of all he sqeezes the ot- then sees the FB -to wrong-arming--this is the progression. i must say this, i'm not big on the perfect technque on wrong-arming/spilling. the only thing i tell my ends are know the schoulder that you must wrong-arm with(right side-right scholder, etc...) and they must be physical. the aimming point is the inside knee. i would like them to get to the 0 hole if at all possible. it is just the same if the FB tries to kick out - go and get him. i want my ends on counters or wide traps to try to get down the L.O.S. as far as they can. Powers/kick-out get as deep into the back field as possible. All of this is possible from keying the FB! sorry about the spelling
i just thought of this and it happened to me twice this year. i would like to hear from others about this counter and how you would play it. the formation is either double tight's or pro/con and the counter is run into the TE. the TE blocks down, guard kicks out and tackle leads into the hole. defense is running a 4-4. the alignment of the DE is inside eye of the TE (playing C-gap) and the TE is blocking down on him. OG kicks out the OLB and OT leads on the PILB. if the end gets blocked this is what will happen. i think this counter is the best play to run at a 4-4 defense. i would have my end run the TE's butt to the bench-string it out. what would you guys have your end do if he could not wrong-arm/spill?
Coach, When we played the 7 tech we saw 3 type of counters. One where the TE would Arc release to the OLB and guard would kick him out. The other way was with the TE blocking down and or tackle TE combo. If the TE were to down block he considered that a base block and play that C gap.... If that end were in a 7 but reading the tackle like some teams do he would see a down by the tackle so a down, down concept... If the TE were kicking his butt we call that being WASHED down, like a washing machine he would spin out of that down block and try to get on the tackle. Hope this helps PG
