What do you see that makes you call inside zone or outside zone? Do you count the box to determine which to call or do you run it at certain techniques?

Coach when running any type of a zone push no need to count the box, because of the ability to take this either frontside or cutback, I call this running the "V". The more your zone push heads out playside the more apt the ball will cut backside. The vertical push creates the "V", the bucket step creates the cutback. Coach CAmpbell
I guess my question is does the number in the box make you decide if you should run inside or outside? If so how many in the box do you like inside against and how many in the box do you like outside against?

Coach the number of defenders in the box has nothing to do with running this types of plays because the running back will read is cuts as they pertain to the angle at which the offensive line uses their footwork. The zone game is not a numbers game but how you set your pushes will determine the running alleys wether inside or outside. Coach CAmpbell

Stick I like running the inside zone scheme vs 6 defenders in the box for both the frontside and backside running alleys, for the 7 man box I will run inside to get the cutback. The reason I like running the option game is to control the box defenses can't gang up on the zone running game because if they do the option is on the perimeter right now. Coach CAmpbell
Coach Campbell I have been a player and coach in the zone game for many years. I was wondering on the outside zone if you combo to stack backers. For examble, If you were running outside zone to the open side and had a 4-2 look, Would the guard and center work to the playside backer or the backside backer. I am assuming no TE or the open side. We would not run outside zone to this but would run inside zone to it. I have heard coaches that do combo to stacks on the outside zone and others who do not. Which do you prefer and do you worry about not being able to get the Oline to the playside backer? Also what is the path of your running back, is it the stretch or is he pressing the line of scrimmage? Thanks

Coach good to hear from you. With the stack and six man box yes you can run the outside zone but it will be a pure cutback play all the way. The inside vertical push zone will give you a frontside and a backside cutback which is called running the "V" the stretch or outside zone will be cutback only. Good play as long as the back understands that this play is cutting backside. Coach CAmpbell
If you have a pretty good tackle you can run the outside zone to the open side and still take it outside. The tackle has to rip past the DE to the second level and the guard has to pull and overtake the DE. This would require the playside DT to be in a one. We would have the center scramble him.
Coach would not have the center scramble the 1 tech. because the play could cut back and you need to keep the back side of the"V" available if the running back sees he can't get outside. Coach Campbell
We're just going to run it that way if we feel we can get the end hooked and get to the edge. If we don't feel we can get to the edge, then you are completely correct. This isn't a chalkboard call, this is a is ours better than theirs call.
Boston College line coach blocks the full zone with two schemes, I believe they were red and white. Vs. a 3-7 or 3-9, they go white. Vs. a 1-5-9 they go red. The center is reaches the one and they expect the one to pursue the play down the line. The FB has the backside 5. backside guard and tackle deuce the 3 tracking will. The playside guard and tackle combo deuce the 5 to the mike. TE bases Sam. Play is designed to cutback to the 0 hole which is vacated by the one tech mirroring the center. Interesting look to the full zone. As Coach Campbell says, play could cut all the way back. Boston Coll. teaches the backs to be patient as they read the flow then explode to the vacated space. If sam gets turned back by the TE, back and explode outside.
