I don't care if one is considered legal and the other not. It is dangerous either way. It is never called consistently by refs. Is it truly ethical to have this remain part of line play? I am a victim of a low high legal block and it cost me a lot of games, in a former life. A rival team of our's is in the playoffs and lost their best lineman 2 weeks ago to a vicious, on-purpose (I saw the film) high low and that kid is done... probably forever...playing football. NO FLAG>>> happened right in front of the ref... If it cannot be monitored successfully, then any form of a high block with a below waist combo should be OUTLAWED...
In 1927, Fielding Yost created his 10 ethical standards, which have become the benchmark of ethics for the AFCA. Number 3 "To consider the welfare of players of paramount importance and not tolerate their exploitation for personal or private gain." Number 7 "To refuse to teach or permit techniques or play contrary to the letter or the spirit of the rules" source, The Football Coaching Bible
As coaches, our number one priority is safety of our players. Number 2 is to teach sportsmanship, if coaches skirt rules or don't prioritize safety of others than their own,,, what are we teaching our players? This sort of combo blocking is malicious and unsafe.
I agree completely. We had that done to one of our kids this year and I completely come unglued. It was not called and I think it is a terrible thing for any coach to teach. It is chicken s@#$ football. I would never teach it even it wasn't against the rules.
It has been outlawed here, but our refs still won't call it. I have sent tape in to the central office. You might try doing that and talking with the supervisor of officals and get his opinion.
