What's the consensus opinion as to which hand is on the ground (and which foot back). let's take a 3-tech tackle as example. should his inside hand be down and outside foot back or vice - versa? If you have a preference - why? Or should you just play with which is more natural?
I have my players with their inside foot back, inside hand down, with the up hand out front and flexed. I believe having the hand down on the back foot side keeps them more balanced. The 3 tech, and my 1 tech would have a toe to instep relation w/the feet, while the ends (5 & 7) would be more staggered, i.e., heel to toe.
Thank for your input. i initially got the hand / foot thing wrong. It was late and I was tired.
So the common opinion ( so far ) is inside hand down and foot back for a 3 tech . Is this so his first step is planted down into the middle of the G's body, and the gap hand can come up under the outside pad. If so I can see the sense in this.
There seems to be conflict over the 1 tech.
Our kids all naturally put their right hands on the ground. Should I then always keep my 3 tech on the left and have my 1 tech on the right ( i play him inside shade on the guard). The level we play means I'm happy to be this predictable on D ( if it helps the players leverage and tech) as it will come down to who plays best.
"Should I then always keep my 3 tech on the left and have my 1 tech on the right ( i play him inside shade on the guard)."
We shift. My 1 & 5 techs are on the weak side, with my 3 and 7 to the TE. Some coaches just have the players move to their respective positions, I believe this takes too much time and causes problems. I prefer the shift of the line once the strength is declared.
As far as the 1 tech, he should split the centers crotch, e.g., strength left, 1 tech shades right of the center.
What has worked with my d-line is that foot placement is paramount, but the hand that is down is up to the player and what he is most comfortable with. When you are in a shade tech. the foot that is splitting the crotch should be back. This is essential in beating the base and reach block since our team mirror steps. If the outside foot was back the ability to take on a base block and create power with the inside foot to squeeze the hole down would almost be impossible. The foot placement is toe to instep for the tackles which is vital when mirror stepping, and the ends are a heel to toe stagger. Have the off hand flexed and ready so there is not wasted movements.
some people live on what they know, and some people live for what they don't
Thanks for your input. There seems to be a general agreement. It's also good when people explain the reasons behind a way of thinking. I'm going back to watch game film and sort the boys stances out.
