Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
We are thinking of adding some quad formations. Any Ideas? The one formation we were thinking about was a tight bunch 3 yds from the tackle and one wide reciever 4 yds from the sidelines. We were thinking of running some mesh stuff and other bunch stuff, however we thought that the wide out would keep the half back out of some of the under stuff.
We run just this formation and it was very good for us last year. We got it from Hanover college in Indiana. What we usually did was line up in our basic bunch, and then motioned our RB out to that outside position. We as coaches, and the QB, observed the defensive reaction. Usually he would draw their cornerback and we got our 3 man bunch on some combination of backers and safeties--advantageous for us.
Also you can line up in it. One advantage is it is a place that you can put your least WR and he can still help you. Most teams cover that outside man.
As for the outside man's routes, it really only consisted of a few things. If they played way way off him, we would throw him a 1 step hitch type pass, or quick raise in our terminology. Then, it depended on the 3 man bunch. Usually we had him run either a go, a smash/hitch type route at 5 yards, or a post. Our theory was if we got some kind of fantastic matchup with our RB on someone really slow we could let him run a go and have him run by him, or if they played way off we could throw him the ball quick. Otherwise his job was mostly to widen the field and we picked the route that worked best in conjunction with whatever bunch pattern we ran.
Other than this we would really just run your basic quads, four receiver set. We'd usually either put the outside man or the 2nd to outside on the ball. We didn't do a lot from this set, as with so many receivers it can be slightly cumbersome, but the biggest things we did the basic no-back stuff everyone likes. We ran the bubble screen with a numbers advantage, the QB draw, and we had big success in isolating the backside receiver. It's very difficult for them to cover all 3 of these things. The last things we usually did was either some kind of quick meshing route, with someone to the flat and someone on a quick under, getting a rub, and then we would run a 4 man hitch pattern to work the underneath seams.
What we would like to do more of, that I observed when I saw the tape of Trinity High School (where Andrew Coverdale was OC) and some other teams have used is either a full sprint or a half roll to that side and the inside man in the quads will be the outside blocking man.
mike leonard who was oc at hanover now head coach at frankline runs a quads bunch. they call it quarters. I have talked with coach leonard about this very subject. I have the few plays he runs off it and i have some film of it.
a good play for around the goaline is that you line up stringing four recievers to one side, the inside three run stops 1 yard into the endzone, and the outside reciever runs a crossing route in the back of the endzone. the quarterback will look for one of the stops to open up, but if the defenders jump on them, then hit the crossing reciever.
Airman- I also wouldn't mind see some of their quads stuff as well. Since the season is over now do you have some time to also include your teams stuff & your new 3x2 idea's?

if you would like I could send you the playbook page I have of the quads bunch concept. email me at dcwagner23@yahoo.com
the latest stuff I am working on is how to have a run game from 3x2 using the bubble screen. well it is really not a run game in the traditional sense of the meaning but it is away to use motion to run the bubble anytime you want. i feel it is going to be a neat little package especially for the younger kids to run.
