Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
If I face a cover 2 team, I like to align in Trips to see if they will remain in that structure...if so, I like to run what I call "bail"....outside receiver shows slant, then widens sharply back to the sideline...the middle receiver runs a 4 yd flat route to hold the corner....the inside receiver runs a seam at the inside shoulder of the near safety...QB reads safety...if he flys to cover #1, he hits #3 in the seam...if he hangs with #3, he looks #1 to #2. pdow
Out of a pro set twins look or a twins single back set a combo that works well is #1 has an out #2 has a flag and the backside TE has what I call a fire route or what I have seen called a barracude route. Where he simply releases off the line (inside if possible), he then gets behind the hook coverage and stretches obliquely to the deep half. If the corner drifts with the flag hit the out. If he plays the out hard then read the deep 1/2 defender. If he doesnt jump the flag then hit it, if he does hit the fire route.

I personally like a fade route and a speedout off three step and a fade with the out route in five step. helps to roll the qb on the five step. also, a post corner with a bench route under it.
This defense is tougher to throw on than cover 3. This defense should be attacked vertically. Some options: 1. Fade route from quick game- this route is great vs. cover 2, but requires a lot of practice. 2. Smash roue- hitch/ corner route. 3. Stretch the safties with seam routes from the slots, then throw underneath them to the outside recivers running digs or ins underneath them. 4. 4 vertical- run one of the inside receivers on a post to split the safties. 5. Anytime your opponent gives you a 2 deep look, the numbers are favorable in the box to run the ball.
