when i combo block w/ either the center or tackle the defensive linemen tends to rip and split us. I dropstepped which seemed to stop it but is there a way for me to go forward and have him still not split us

If you are pushing your play vertically you must close the door by getting hip to hip with your partner or as I teach my guys "Hippo" with the combo. If you are drop stepping your play will probably stretch so this means your running back must help you so he will probably cut the play back once he sees this situation happen. Good question. Big guy the difference in how fast you rotate your blocking scheme is related to how the back gets the ball. If the ball is tossed to him for and outside run then the blocking scheme rotates fast, if the ball is given to him inside the tackle to out side hip of the guard then the blocking scheme slow rotates or goes vertically straight up the field.
