I saw an interview the Coach Croom (Mississippi State) over the weekend and he made a comment that I thought was profound at least for the common football fan. When asked what type of offense he will run at Miss St, he responded that he would like to run some of the things that they run at Green Bay, but he can't do as much "because they won't have the time to properly implement it". How many of us coaches have had to deal with comments from the average fan regarding play assortment and why we don't run this and that..."why don't we run more plays, coach?" "Why don't we have different plays for different opponents, coach?". Think about it...NFL coaches are 100% full-time coaches all day long....Div 1 college coaches do have other responsibilities (i.e. recruiting), but can devote a majority of their day to coaching...NFL players are 100% full-time players all day long...Div 1 college athletes do have other responsibilities (classes, obviously) but can devote a significant part of the day to football...High School coaches must not only coach, but plan for and conduct classes...tend to lunch and morning duties...attend special education meetings....attend in-services and department meetings...conference with parents of students...complete the mass amounts of paperwork required by law...etc...etc...as well as devising game plans, practice planning, and all the other things required to be successful on the game field. HS players have classes and other obligations as well. The next time I am asked "why aren't we able to do what the Cowboys do?", I will defer to Coach Croom. Just a thought....pdow
