I have an opportunity to be a head coach at a 1A HS (in Texas). I am currently a D.C. at a 3A. The 3A school is mildly successful ( should go to the playoffs next year.) I REALLY want to be a HC. I have been coaching 6 years and have been also been at 2 5A and a 2A. WHich would you say would be a better career move.
Here is my suggestion, although I don't claim to be a genius. I wouldn't take a head coaching job for the sake of pure want. Now if that 1A school has a solid foundation...good support...and, in your opinion, is set for success, then it's an opportunity you should consider. However, if you have a number of questions that you cannot get answered...if you have uncertainty and those you speak to express uncertainty...I would wait on it. It's kind of like an impulse purchase at a store...you decide something because the want is so bad that your blinded by it and fail to make a decision based on logic and common sense. If things don't go well at that 1A school, you take the chance of getting yourself buried. If you think that the support system is there and you have a legitimate chance to win, go coach your butt off. Make your decision based on logic and common sense...not on emotion and "feel". I'm interested in reading Coach Campbell's advice. pdow
I agree with not chasing the title. There are some places that no matter how hard you work, and how much effort you put in you are not going to get the support needed to be successful. Investigate the situation completely, talk to the shop keepers, the kids, coaches in the next town. Anyone and everyone you can to get the real scoop on the situation you would be getting into. Also trust in God, he will lead you in the right direction, and even if it seems like the wrong one at first, or for the first 4 years, have faith because there is a means to an end, and he is the only one who knows.
ENC I could not have said it better. Everything happens with the graces of what I believe is a greater power. Yes the lord will give you opportunities. If you choose them get ready for the tests of faith he sets up for you. The research and information you gather can help you make that decision. However, how you handle the things outside of your control will be the most important part of being a head coach. For example, I was named HC one week and my daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes 10 days later and later that week our biggest booster( a major soft drink company) withdrew the donation it intended to make. There I was a home life in turmoil and I needed to find/raise another $10,000 in 3 months. Luckily I have a family, pastor, friends, assistants, and players and their families. Remember you accept the job be sure to have a team surrounding you that supports you. My advise is research what you can and repare for those situations that can and do arise.
A friend told me the other day, after he lost his job,I can either get Bitter or I can get Better . By the grace of God I will only get better. Things can get tough, mentally, in our business. However I believe that if you keep things in perspective, 1. Faith 2. Family 3. Football, than no matter how bad things can get you will always come out on top

As a Head Coach a major question that has to be addressed is the ability to surround yourself with coaches who share your same ideas and objectives or at least have coaches who are loyal to your program and desire the same outcome through your direction. Change is tough for coaches who remain behind off the old staff when a new coach comes in and starts to change the direction of the program and its goals, must have a united staff. When taking over a program make sure you can impliment your ideas and have the ability to truely build off the old. Change is tough but when taking over a new program you must surround yourself with those who believe in what you are trying to do. Assistant coaches are extensions of the head coach. Kids will follow if all the coaches are talking the same story and can reflect the goals and its outcome of the Head Coach. Being a Head Football Coach is interesting to say the least but very rewarding when hitting on all cylinders. Invest time in your staff and have your staff invest time in the kids. The more time your coaches invest in the kids the more apt the kids won't let their coaches down. (If you don't invest very much then you won't get very much). Also, have coaches that are always seeking new ways to skin a cat, don't always return the same coach year in and year out. Coach CAmpbell
