No one knows exactly when the game of football eactually began, but historians tell us that ancient Greeks played a kind of football game called harpaston. It took place on a rectangular field with with goal lines at either end. A center line divided two teams of equal but varying size, and the game commenced when the harpaston, or handball, was tossed up between them. Then the members of both teams tried to pass, kick or run the ball over the other team's goalline, even as we do today, more than two thousands years later. The Story of Football By Robert Leckie
