My son has expressed an interest in karate training during the offseason to help develop quicker hands and feet. I was wondering if the enhanced flexibility required for karate is detrimental to the hip and shoulder joints in terms of the joint stability and ability to withstand contact without dislocations, etc.?
One of the best things your son can do to improve his flexibility is to join the wrestling team. Wrestling not only demands that all parts of your body be strong and flexible, it also reinforces a lot of football technique (tackling, stance, footwork, etc...). Wrestling is consistently one of the most overlooked sports for imporving football players. Also, the "athletic" strength, supreme condition, and thoughness he will gain from the sport cannot be found in the weightroom. Clipper Coach.
Thanks Clipper, We had a great wrestling program at my high school when I was growing up. They actually started us all in third grade with a big elementary tournament coached by the varsity team. So I am well aware of the benefits of wrestling to a football player. Unfortunately, the league the local high school is in does not have wrestling, so it is not an option. Thanks for the input though.
Developing flexability is one key to preventing injuries. Karate does stress total body flexability, much of which is developed in dynamic exercises not unlike the Inchworm or Spiderman. In addition, the tumbling required forces an individual to move the body in ways that will increase strength, speed and endurance.
I have yet to hear of a person suffering from joint degeneration when they were really involved in well taught martial arts.
Worried about injuries in the shoulder, knees, and hips- have your son think about swimming. Talk about total body/core training. Swimming develops range of motion and strength that are invaluable in all sports.
What we've found that has really helped our flexibility are the Pilate workouts. We are using them in our off-season as well as our strength training classes offeered in the curriculum.
