Empty set/1 Back Jet/Fly sweep???

We run the jet sweep out of several different looks, including single back and no back. The way we approach it is to teach the sweep concept to the 5 linemen first - by themselves. After that, you can teach what happens when you add a tight end or a second back or both. This way you can run it out of whatever different look you want.

We are a spread team that uses some 2 back (offset I and split backs) from time to time. I would say that our jet package makes up about 10-20% of our total offense on average. It's tough to tell, because we mix it in with so many different things and we run a lot of counters off of it.

I will send you what we have, but I'll have to get it organized a little first. What I can tell you right now is that we have two basic ideas when we run the jet sweep (for us the sweep in which the WR gets the ball first).

We will try to get outside first, by reaching and pulling the guards. The two key blocks for us are the playside T trying to reach the DE and the playside G pulling and blocking the overhang. Basically anyone head up or inside the playside G simply will not get to the play if we run it correctly (we have seen this over and over in practice and in games). We tell our WR to try to get outside the DE and then read the block of the guard on the overhang defender.

Second, if teams are really selling out to try to contain the sweep, we will down block and kick out with the playside guard. In this play, we have our WR look to cut up the C gap, just inside the block of the guard. In this play, the inside blocks are important as you need to get a good seal on the DT and ILB in order for a lane to open. The nice thing about this play is that the overhang doesn't need to be blocked, as he takes himself out of the play by going too wide.

As far as our running back is concerned, we usually have him carrying out a fake up midline. That way we can occasionally hit him on the trap or inside zone to keep the defense honest. Every once and a while we'll let him offset or we'll go split backs and get an extra man leading the sweep. You can also have your tight end be an extra man on the playside.

Everything else comes off those two plays. Speed option away, inside trap, inside zone, quick toss away, QB sweep away, boot away, etc.

"Counter" was probably a bad word to use. What I meant by that was that we have several complimentary plays that are we use to take advantage of defenses that sell out or overpursue the sweep. We don't run any type of true counter play off the jet sweep, although there is no reason why you couldn't.

www.jetsweep.com specializes in the jet sweep. It is based off the wing-t system, but is easily adjusted to 1 or no back.

A couple of the key contributors are Tom Herman from Mercyhurst College and Wes Elrod from Cumberland. I purchased a book and video from each. Great stuff!

Since they are based on wing-t, they have counters that hit the A/B/C/D gaps off of the jet. There is also the "Down" and "Trap" plays to either side. Also counter criss-cross and reverse.

It is about Malvern Prep HS's wing-t jet/speed sweep. I am sure that you could take alot and apply it to your offense's jet sweep. It is a 2 video set for $69.96. I have not seen it, but am considering ordering it.
