What is the major differences between the Trap Option and the Freeze Option? Are these just two different names for the same play? Also, what defensive keys or strategies would lead you to call the Trap Option or Freeze Option?

The difference in the two plays which are similar is that on freeze option the Tailback doesn't move until the QB takes his second step. On freeze option you have the backside puller and QB headed out in the same direction. Two types of trap option, this is how I tell the difference in the two plays. With trap option you have the QB and tailback going opposite the pulling guard and fullback. You have the trap in one direction with the QB having the option to pull the ball and take himself in the opposite direction with either keep or pitch as his options. Coach CAmpbell

Coach Golla congrats. on a great season, I'm looking forward to visiting with you and hope we can clinic this summer. I run midline only due to the fact I don't want to teach the pull on freeze and the hesitation by the Tailback. Looking forward to hearing from you. Coach CAmpbell
Coach, I will give you a call this weekend. Myself and another staff want to come out and visit you again... Coach how much pulling do you do? Thank you for all of your help without you we would not be where we are.. PG.
I like the freeze option, although I didn't get to run it much this year because our guards were just too slow for it. However, freeze option is a great play when the ILB'ers are sucking up hard inside on your midline or regular quick trap. If the LB's tend to play soft and are QB aware, I'll hit them with the inside trap or midline....if they start reading the inside trap and are plugging, that is the time to call freeze option...I use the same action in the backfield and, since we are a one-back team, I use motion to get a pitch player in position. pdow
