Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I am curious to hear from any of you that pair run plays or run/pass plays. What I mean is, say the play called is midline check Inside Veer. When the QB gets to the line there is a 3 tech to the playside so he sticks with midline. If he got up there and there was a 1 tech then the veer would be the better play so he just calls check check which lets the team know they are running the second play called. I am curious if any of you do this, what kind of success you have, your system for checking off and how much trouble do the kids have picking it up. I'm also wondering if you flip plays or check runs to uncovered WR's such as the bubble etc. Thanks
We do something similar, but not "paired" in the sense that you mean. What we will do is call "Lead Audible" in the huddle (or "Dive Audible" or "Sweep Audible" or whatever play you want to run) with a formation and snap count. The QB then comes to the line and reads his keys, whatever they may be for that particular running play. Our cadence always starts with a color-number call, spoken twice, before we "go!". The offensive team knows that we are running a "Lead" play, it's just a matter of which side we are running to. Our holes are numbered odds to the left and evens to the right. If the QB calls ANY even number, it's a Lead to the right. If he calls ANY odd number, it's a lead to the left. That way, opponents won't key on what your number system is (unless they're really bright).
i like that way also, but you have to have a bright qb. we tried this system a few years back, and our qb called the back who was getting it, and the hole he was going to. example: blue 33, blue 33. didn't take long for the defense to figure out 33 Iso. Thanks QB. He couldn't think real quickly, but was a good athletic qb, so we changed it for him.
A little humor on audibles. We had a very intelligent QB a couple years ago that read defenses very well. In fact, he now the starting QB at Carneige Mellon. We were behind by 2 with 2 minutes to go and were on our opponents 5 yard line. He came to the line, saw a change in the Defense, and checked into the Inside Veer left. It was a great call, was blocked perfectly and was wide open but the QB forgot his own audible and went the wrong way. Result - fumble, game over. It wasn't funny at the time neadless to say.
We will audible from a run to a pass or a pass to a run mostly depending on the number in the box. We don't use the traditional audible system that is built into the cadence. Our QB will use a "live" words and signals after making an "easy" call to the line if he wants to change the play (i.e. the live words might be any NFL teams nickname)...he will also use "dummy" words and signals to make false calls (using, let's say state names). For instance, he calls 12 Veer in the huddle but the defense aligns in 0 coverage....QB will say "Easy, Easy....Cowboy 62, Cowboy 62"....calll changes to 62 pass. If he wants to make a dummy call, he might call "Texas 62, Texas 62"...doesn't dummy call on everything, but uses judgement. pdow
We use an audible system that checks from Inside Runs to either Outside runs/Options vs. 1 Safety or 3 step drop vs. 0 Safeties. We stay in the Inside Run play called in the huddle vs. 2 or 3 Safety defenses unless we are flipping the play to or away from a specific shade.
If we call a pass play we stay in it no matter what. We are, however, thinking of checking out of PA passes vs. 0 Safety defenses in the future. 3 step, 5 step, and Sprint Draw protection are solid vs. 0 Safety defenses.
This has increased our offensive efficiency/production by 300% and it is an easy system for the QB.
We use coach campbell's option on me system, and our Qb was great this year. We went option on me no huddle and let him check at the line. We also would pair plays with a flexed tight end. When we pair plays, we pair load/veer to one side, and he will check based on the DE. If he is in a 3, 4, or 4i, we run load. If he is in a 5, we run veer. We also call veer on me, where QB will look for a 1-5. Your QB must be able to check out of bad plays and into good ones. We had a young oline this year (5 sophs), and 4 of them were under 210 pounds. But, we were in a good play so often that they were able to have success. We want to put our guys in a position to be successful.
