I've got some questions about zone blocking and some of the footwork involved with the associated plays.
Covered/Uncovered Rule - Is a player covered if he has a defender that is aligned from head up, to the inside shade, of his adjacent playside teammate? For example, the PSG is considered covered if he has a d'lineman aligned in a 2, 3, B gap, or 4i?
Base Call - If a lineman has a headup defender is he supposed to make a base call, or, at his discretion, can he make a combo call (ace/deuce/trey as appropriate) to pull over an adjacent uncovered linemen (could be on either side of him) for a combo?
Initial Call - is the initial line call for zone blocking made by the O'lineman at the POA, or do the line calls always start with the PSTE (tight side) or PST (open side)? When the calls are echoed down the line (base/ace/deuce/trey etc.) is there ever a concern that the defenders will hear the calls?
Near Ear Rule - is this rule defined by the particular call being made (depending if you are covered or uncovered, and if you are base or called to a combo) and the POA? For example, if the PSTE had a 6 tech and called base, then the near ear would be the playside ear (ear hole facing the sideline) of the 6 tech?... and if the PST was on a deuce then the near ear for the tackle would be the defender's playside ear, and the near ear for the guard would be the defender's inside ear?
More Near Ear - how is this handled when a lineman is uncovered and both of his adjacent teammates made base calls, who is the uncovered lineman supposed to block? e.g. what if you are running inside zone against a 50 look with a 9, 5, 0 techs that are based, who will the PSG block? what about a 4-4 type look with a 6 tech and a 3 tech playside, who does the PST block? Sorry about these what-ifs but the near ear rule can be confusing, I'm not sure if I totally understand it.
Bounce - does this play require footwork for a slow rotating zone or a fast rotating zone?
Stretch - does this play require footwork for a fast rotating zone but the hips are not rotated as with a toss sweep?
Full versus Fast - is there a distinction between full zone footwork and fast zone footwork? i.e. does one require circle the wagons technique and other does not?
Vertical Push - are there two different footwork techniques for vertical push zone blocking? i.e. zone blocking for jab play versus a dive play
Pulling Lineman - when you incorporate a pulling linemen in the blocking scheme does this then require the zone blocking to be modified with some man blocking rules? If so, are there any systematic rules to mix man and zone for a play with a pulling lineman, or do the blocking rules need to be play specific?
These are a lot of questions but I would appreciate any insights that can be shared.
