Coach I teach the near ear and each play is tagged with an identifying word such as 46 stretch. Stretch is the alert to dropstep reaching the playside ear etc. Coach CAmpbell
Its best to have rules on who to block. I know Wing T teams usually block down on the playside and bring the backside men to kick out. Some zone teams do alot of reach blocking where you simply reach step to the playside and block the most dangerous man. It all depends on what your scheme is.

I was wondering if anybody has any blocking schemes for blocking the triple option to the strong and weak side vs. both a 5-2 and a 4-4 defense. Toward the end of the year (especially in the playoffs), the inside LB's were killing us on the tirple and midline to the strong side. They were flying to the ball, and our lineman had no chance to get them. The playside linebacker would immediately fill the C gap, and the backside LB would scrape HARD to the A Gap and kill the FB. Any suggestions? :confused;
for the triple option vs. an odd front you can either base it like they did when the inside veer first got started or you can loop it (assuming this is a 404 or something like it). if the backers are flowing running it the base way is a waste (that tackle will never be able to get to the scraping backer)... if you loop it (meaning the p.s tackle reaches to the outside of the defensive tackle and seals him inside).. your p.s guard will reach upfield but peel back to the backside backer. now your QB can read the tackle for dive, end for pitch.
if you're running to the TE side a trick that teams used to do (they dont do it any more because no one is patient) is running an ISO scheme with the fullback simply diving into the hole. vs. a 5-2 you would have the playside guard and center quick combo to the backside linebacker, and have the tackle base the defensive tackle (if he's in a 3 you will combo). what happens is the linebacker flows so fast that he overruns the fullback. TE will 'tap' the end and go to the flowing backer.
vs. a 5-2 you can also try a zone cutback. and most teams, when faced with a 50 front will run outside veer to the TE side... it's less of a mess.
vs. a 4-4 (assuming your in an I) you should run inside veer to the TE side. to the SE gets tricky, the tackle and guard may not be able to get a good block on that P.S backer.
your guard and tackle need to combo to the p.s. backer, t.e archs to the outside backer, QB read end for dive, look inside for pitch (scraping inside backer - no, not all 44 teams play backers in A gap).
hope that helps. try motioning that "Z" to the "X" side then run the inside veer to the SE side. -andrew
