Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
As a high school coach how hard would it be for me to put in this offense? Is it a hard offense for QB/REC/ and RBs to learn? If you have average or below average kids can they run this offense? Would you run it from a split backfield or the I? What kind of OL do you need? Is it better at the HS level out of the gun?
My suggestion.....understand, at least in Texas, we are allowed 8 hours of practice time per week with our kids....this includes after school practice and any meeting time outside of our 50 minute athletic period. Colleges are allowed 20 hours per week and the pros are essentially unrestricted. To think that a HS program can fully install an offense in the same fashion that a college or pro team can is quite a reach. You can install a scaled down version of the West Coast offense, but don't expect to be able to install anything close to what the colleges and pros can....they simply have more time. This is the perspective that the average high school fan and football parent have a hard time understanding. pdow
I think that the West Coast concept works just fine at the High School level. However, if you are installing the West Coast Offense as run at the higher levels, you will probably have some issues. The West Coast system is very complex and is not the best system for younger football players to learn the game in my opinion. However, we have adapted much of the West Coast concept and philosophy to our own existing system and it works great for us.
My suggestion would be to research the principles and philosophy that the West Coast is based upon, and adapt that style of play design and play calling to your existing system.
at the high school level I feel it is hard to be balanced offensively. the wco is a high percentage throwing offense with play action, 3 step and 5 step passing attack. there are some good west coast tapes buy jay norvell.
like i said, I believe one has to hang there hat on something. for me it is the passing game but I do not pretend that I am eve remotely interested in running the ball. we go alot of west coast offense from noback 5 wides.
