Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Coaches, We are a multiple set team that is based on the Pro I. At the moment I do not run option although I have a background with the Outside Veer. My returning QB will be more of a passer than runner but I still think we need some type of Option game maily to be able to attach the outside whne defenses load up inside. What are your thoughts on which Option I should install? and thoughts on how to install?
Michael Ryan Guidance Counselor/Head Football Coach Thomas McKEan H.S. Wilm., DE
I run the "I" as our base option set and the inside veer, midline, and load (lead) option are good compliments to your other plays. Outside veer harder to run from the "I" set thats why we run Load. Coach CAmpbell
Do you ever work the outside veer out of the off set I formations (King/Queen Sets)? Does this play take up to much time to install due to the fact that your usage is limited to the off set formations. I would like to find a way to incorporate this play into my team's base offense which is the I formation. I don't know if I will ever be able to figure this question out, but a lot of people smarter then me have been trying to figure out this questions for quite a while. Let me know your thoughts.
Another possible option would be the G dive/G option scheme - Wing T coaches would call it Down or Belly( we call it belly) it is a double option and does not require as much time as the triple(which I think is the best play in FB). The FB dive play is good vs most Defenses and there are couple ways to run the option( FB bounces or fakes the dive, guard logs or kick, can use zone scheme as well)
pdow27, You are correct. Running option out of gun really creates problems for defenses. I spent time with coach campbell finding ways to attack the perimeter out of the gun. He does a tremedous job with his 1 / 2 back gun scheme. Having the QB in gun really expands the running game by creating a double option out the back door or having a swing man for pitch out the back door.
For us, the inside veer has been our most consistent option play over the last four years. We can run the inside veer from multiple formations, and our QB's get downhill right now if they get a pull read. We run the inside veer away from the tight end when we have no invert to the open side. This leaves the defense with two to take three, and we can win that battle. Your QB doesn't have to be a burner, and the play action pass off the veer is very dangerous.
Coach Vint and Others, What is your favorite play-action pass off of the Inside Veer? Our 3,5 step and sprint game are pretty good, but our play-action game is lacking.
Against cover three I like play action with either a playside wheel curl or a backside wheel curl. Against cover two I like the smash concept(post corner/hitch).
We put our go to our green set with the tight end at 6 yards, and the playside receiver at 14 yards. We run the wheel route off veer action. OS runs post, inside runs wheel, FB takes ride and runs a read route at 5 yards, TB runs swing. BS receiver runs an intermediate cross. It is very difficult to defend for any coverage. Vs. cover 2 our wheel can sit in the void between the corner playing flats and the safety over the top, but the safety is rarely able to get there in cover 2 as he is biting on the option fake.
Just like you all talked about. I like the post wheel route when you safeties running the alley. Versus zone like curl-whell combination. Also, like to throw bkside DIG routes versus teams that run zone against us.
