Does anybody running the 3-5 defense have a players that always line up strong side and players that always line up weak side. In other words does anybody flip flop there there defense.
We played the stack last year starting in about week 5 and by playoff time we never came out of it. We came from a 4-3 and so all of our terminology we tried to keep the same as to not confuse our kids. We flipped our Edge players, our front, and our LB's. I'm interested to hear the pros and cons of flipping. What do ya'll think?
we flip only our stingers. the way we run our defense, our 2 stingers are different types of players who have different strengths/weaknesses. we don't flip anyone else though.
Coach, We started off flopping but stopped because our kids would not get enough reps versus te or no te. Meaning when someone got into 2 te our kids were confused on what gap they had. So we told them not to flop and learn with te and with no te. Things change in the blitz for us strong and weak and we do not want to be limited in our blitzing. When we see teams flop we will align our TE at fb let the d get set them send him to a side, we flop motion etc... I know teams that are VERY successful flopping I think what we do our kids need to know both. And how to drop versus TE, slot, etc are all different. PGOLLA
We did not flip LB's - this was the first time I have been associated with a defense that did not and I never want to go back to flip flopping them.
We did not want to flip anyone else either, but we only had 1 DECENT DE and 1 DECENT Spur, so we played our best DE to the TE and best Spur to the field so we could hide the softer Spur into the boundary. If ball was in between goalposts, Our better Spur went to our left.
we are going to this D this year and i need any tips or drill for d-line play i can get . any websites books etc. that anyone suggests thanks in advance
I have liked it best to not flip the interior 6 or back 3. They get comfortable and confident.
I do however flip the Spurs/Bandits. I have a field and a boundry. The two guys that play this are two completely different type players. The field player is just a solid player. Not the fastest, biggest....but smart and does not make mistakes. The boundry player is our best player/athlete combo. That is different than what 3-3-5 coach said where he puts his best to the field. Having him on the short side, we can play so many games that it to hard to do with a wide side player.
we have flipped corners, especially when we played a cover 3 with a weak roll. Our Weak corner had to be a good tackler and somewhat Physical, Our Strong corner was a cover guy and less physical. We have not flipped the last few years because the corners were both good tacklers and pretty good cover guys. It takes more practice time if you flip since they have work on both sides but if your have a difference in ability it is helpful to flip. We usually flip our Sam and Will LB's and again they are usually different types of players. Will is usually more of a SS type and Sam is more of a normal LB type.
although i'd prefer not to have to flip the corners, next year it appears that we're going to have to. one guy that is fast and can hit, the other, fast and cannot hit -- at all.
so, i guess it's probably better to not say we have to do it either way.
Coach Golla, I have been reading your responses lately and am curious as to what this defense gives you that say a 50 defense doesn't. In our area we have to stop the run primarily and I would like to see the base allignments you use in this sytem. Thank you, Matt Jacobsen My email is mattjacobsen@boiseschools.org
Coach, With the 50 you have to lb type kids on the l.o.s. We don't, we have them play off so they can make plays anywhere on the field. I also like the fact that in the 3-3 there are 6 defensive men inside the tackle box. I do not know of any other defense that does that and still be sound versus the pass. 3-3 lets us blitz every snap without giving up any big plays if we miss because of our 3 saft behind us. I also think with the 3-3 you do not need any d-line, we really blay with all linebackers. Which for us we can now truely put the best 11 on the field. Adjustments are easy, the things we can do really are endless. jump to 4-6,50,4-2 etc... and it effects no one. Hope that helps. PGOLLA
Coach, How often will you shift out of the 3-3 and into another look? Also, how often do you stunt with it? We are looking to run it and I would think that if we just sit in it too often, we will not be strong enough vs. the run. I like the amount of stunts you can put together with the defense, but would like to know from coaches with experience running it how often you stunted. Also, do you play two 5's and a 0 or do you move them around vs. openside or shade the nose? I know that's a lot of questions, but I want to ensure that I fully utilize the defense correctly.
