Coaches,
In reading through the various forums I sort of 'profile' coaches according to their systems and the way they describe them. Being a Behavioral Science geek, I believe we stamp our systems with our personality and vice versa. I was wondering if some of you could take a minute and list:
1) Your offensive system any why;
2) Your defensive system and why;
3) Your personality type (as you see yourself); and
4) Your gut reaction to 'game turning events' (i.e. Aggressive - opponent is driving for a go ahead score and you are blitzing instead of playing deep prevent - or - Conservative - You are up one score before the half and you run out the clock on the opponents side of the field - or - somewhere in between - use your own words) **"it depends on the situation" is not allowed. Just think about all of those situations from the last year and tell us what you did the majority of the time.
Plus, if you coach under someone else's system (feeder or lower levels) state what you do now AND what you would do if you were the HC.
Here's my info:
I am a Head JV coach (running someone else's system)
1) Multiple formation I-Based Running attack. Our tradition dictates what we do. The current coaching staff is 90%+ alumni and have had awesome success in the past.
2) 4-4 cover 3. Same as above
3) Conservative - Dictated to me by the Varsity staff.
4) Don't do anything that can hurt you (dictated to me by the varsity staff).
When I have an opportunity to be the HC:
1) 2x2 - 3x1 Spread - Option/DW/3step Hybrid. I feel the hybrid offers the pieces missing from the typical offensive attack utilized by programs in our area.
2) 3-5 Cover 3. I like the aggresiveness and confusion the 3-3 has to offer.
3) Aggressive but not suicidal - I like very aggressive assistants (I believe in going for it on 4th and reasonable from our 40+; I believe in blitzing the QB as long as our secondary can handle it; and my special teams coach would know he has a green light on most everything)
4) Aggressive - Onside kick to start games, fake FGs on 4th and ?, fake punts on our side of our 40, hurry-up offense for the whole first half, jailbreak blitzes on 1st down, bump and run coverage on 2nd down, and scoring again before the half on our arch rival - even while up 20+ (vendetta payback for an ugly passing league incident).
This is definitley not a 'better than you' type of inquiry. It is more of a tool for those of us that only know each other by our screen names to better understand who is on the other end of a post. Plus it will be interesting to see who runs what and why.
