After reading lots of posts, I get the idea sometimes that a lot of coaches do not believe they can play just this defense and be successful. It seems many coaches are packaging the 4-6 with it as well as many other multiple fronts to get the job done. My opinion, for whatever it is worth, is that you may not need anything other than the 3-3-5 to get it done.
I believe you can align the NG and DE's in a 0 and 4 (headup) respectively and do enough out of this front to win. Am I saying rush just 3? Absolutely not. With these 3 guys being in this alignment, the offense obviously does not know where they are going which is huge. This basically gives you three fronts right there. Keep in mind, you still have EIGHT other players to do whatever you need to with to get the offense off the field without scoring. The schemes, stunts, blitzes are endless. I do not mean blitz every down, because there are some very sound schemes that have been developed with having your DL in this same alignment for them all.
Your NG needs to know 2 techniques: the Stuff Technique (basically a two gap; or to be sound, play backside cutback if reached) and a rip technique when you move the front.
Your DE's need to play a 5 tech (stepping to it at the snap), a slant tech, and a loop tech.
I do not see the need to work a shade if you do not have to with your DL. I don't know about you guys, but we did not have the practice time to rep all these different alignments and techniques, so we never have to worry about not getting lined up bproperly ecause they are always in the same place. Also, we are just not big enough to align in shades and give our kids a chance to win. This is one reason why most people are interested in this front due to the fact they may be undersized up front.
As an adjustment in short yardage, instead of slanting both DE's, we would align them in three techniques, but did not take time to rep it in practice because we wanted to rep the other stuff that we played the most of.
I know not only our team believed in this system, but another team in another state who has been to the title game two years in a row does the same thing as far as the front in concerened. Again, this is just my opinion as I know most of you know (or forgot) more about football than I ever know!
