Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
What size lineman do most of you guys have? I'm just curious. Do you guys have hybrid DE/LB types or LB's because you're small? Or do you have studs that can run the show? I can definitely see this being run at the HS level because of a lack of studs up front.
We are a small private school playing in AA (4A being the largest).
DE - 6-1, 225 DE 5-11, 190
NG 5-10 200
Our NG made 100 tackles and the larger of our DE was a good player who we put to the TE side. The other DE had never played the game and averaged 1 tackle per game. All of them could run.
I haven't run the defense yet, I will put it in this spring. I just started researching it in November after watching Tulsa play Boise State pretty tough. Last year I did run a 5-3 and my nose guard was 5'7" 165. He was all over the place. He had 11 tackles for a loss and had 80 total tackles. He is also a wrestler for me and had extremely good quickness, pad level and balance. It helped him tremendously. I do understand that the nose is put in a different situation in the 3-3 though. My nose was a senior so I'm moving my DE/OLB from last year to the nose. He's 5'10" 190. He's very tough and also a good wrestler ( I really believe that this helps my interior lineman a lot). I think he will do well for me. My Ends are still up in the air. I have a kid that played End last year that is 6'4" 205. I think he will do fine, he's just not as strong and doesn't have the pad level I would like to see with him. Can this potentialy hurt me out there? Are the things he will face similar to being a 50 End-- reach, downblock/ kick-out/ etc?
I believe the less physical your kids are up front, the more you may want to move the front (slant, loop). This allows a kid who may not be real strong or play with good leverage to use his quickness and speed to make plays that he is not capable of making when he is not slanting or looping. Yes, he will see base, reach, down just like your 50 DE.
