What are the best drill to get the o-line to explode and drive? Our feet seem to stop moving and we don't have that "pop" when contact is initiated. Thanks
Coach, Using a 7 man sled, we have the OL and TE's get on their knees and "Punch" the bags as hard as they can keeping their elbows inside and thumbs up. If everyone hits it at the same time then the sled moves. We then progress to the "Superman" stage, where they are on their knees with their toes dug into the turf. On the whisle they "punch" then fully extend their arms and ROTATE THROUGH THE HIPS, landing in a fully extended sprawling position with their bellys hitting the ground. This teaches "explosion" though the block.
To keep their feet moving, just have them excelerate their feet on contact and drive to the whistle, you can have a quick whistle (5-10 sec.) or a long whistle (20 sec.). We will drive the 7 man sled AT LEAST twice a week for 10 minutes at a time constantly changing our cadence. When we get to the end of the 10 min. we go to "Goalline" time where we drop the TE's and have the 5 OL hit the 7 man sled 4 times for a total of 10 seconds with 20 seconds of rest. One, this simulates the fatigue of a long drive, and two it puts the pressure squarely on the OL to punch it in.
