I am reading Coverdale Robinson v2 and I they were talking about attacking a quarters coverage with the quick smash out of a Twins set. They gave a few explanations of ideas that work but one thought kept crossing my mind. Why not tag the TE's route to a cross.
The conventional quick smash wouldnt work because #1's hitch will be undercut by Will widening into the flat. #2's quick smash wont work because he will be running it into a retreating corner. Now what I thought of doing would be to tag the TE and have him run a cross and basically chase the Will into the flat.
So what would happen is #2 would run his quick smash and be covered. Now all you have to do is read Will between the hitch and the cross. If Will widens quickly then hit the cross. If he doesnt get width quickly hit the hitch.
Does anyone run this? If so does the TE tag work? Does Mike abuse the TE and not let him out across his zone? Does it develop too slowly?

You know what, Ledger.....as much as I like to drag receivers for that exact reason, I more often than not experience having my drag route killed by an inside backer. It never seems to fail....I watch a thousand miles of tape and believe I can drag under or over the LB'ers based on how they play. Then...when we get into the game...sure enough, they absolutely crush my drags and cross routes. I'm a stubborn fool though....I will continue to run them. pdow
Well, it's honestly not quite as bad as I described. We do hit 'em some and they are effective it's just that you really notice when they get drilled. Sometimes it's before...sometimes it's after....it varies. But they are good controlling routes and our system accounts for it so we do have alternatives. pdow
I have even better vs quarters for a smash. uw platteville has a play called smash option.
in a 2x2 set the defender over the slot is going to fly to the flats because he knows 1. his has help inside and outside over the top and 2. if he does not the hitch will be open. so when seeing this you just have the slot who would normally run the corner route, stop and turn his numbers to the qb. it amounts to a hitch route. you have to be quick so you get the ball there and the rec need to know how to turnup field and get going or he is going to get tackled.
