Coaches,
When you have two linemen working a combo block, what is the technique for the player that is to slide off to the LB? I know that initially the two O Linemen get hip-to hip and vertically push the defender. Do they each push with a forearm, or does the linemen who is sliding off just use a "hand-check" technique, keeping his shoulders facing up-field and allowing the lineman staying on the defender to get his hands inside on the down lineman and turn him in? Any help in this technique would be appreciated.

Coach with inside zone I teach hand to the numbers and no forearm at all. Vertical push is for our inside zone scheme with 6 defenders in the box, with 7 defenders in the box the push for your offensive linemen tends to turn into stretch footwork. Coach Campbell
The varsity coach at my school teaches the forearm on the guy leaving the combo. They watched all the tape from the 2002 season and saw that there were many times that the guy leaving the combo would get his hand stuck and wasnt able to get it out as quickly as the coaches would like. This season they went to a forearm instead of a hand. I havent talked to him since the season ended but we will be going to a few clinics in March. I will ask him what he thought of the forearm after he looked at the tape.

Ledgersko thats called rocking the combo with the forearm which for the most part keeps you one step behind the linebacker run throughs. I know I haven't coached in your state and has been along time since I've been a freshman coach. look forward to your response about the forearm use. Coach Campbell
I'll ask the varsity o-line coach when I see him next. It might be a month or two but I will see what he says. We have been a option offensive team for over 30 years switching between flexbone and split back veer.
