Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I'm taking a hard look at our weekly practice schedules to see if there is a better way to arrange thing. We are a small school and our kids have to play both ways. It is imparitive that we are as efficient as possible so that our kids get the most group and team offensive reps they can get, in addition to everything else. I'd appreciate hearing what you guys do during a typical week. Also, how much time do you dedicate to your #2s?
Our breakdown right now looks like this. Monday: 20 min - Group Run, 20 min - Group Pass, 20 min Team Tuesday: 30 min - Group Run, 30 min Group Pass, 30 min Team Wednesday: Defensive Day Thursday: 60 min Team (Walkthru)
For the most part we try to break up our reps during group time as evenly as possible between 1s and 2s. During team time, our 1s get the majority of the action.
This is something I am looking it at well. I believe I need to do a better job of getting the #2s reps in order to keep them interested. We play our games on Sats for the most part.
Questions:
We want to lift 2 days a week? When would you lift? Also, when do you want film?
Hello coaches. I don't mind sharing our schedule, and I would be interested in seeing other peoples ideas as well. We are a medium sized school (4A out of 6) with about 40 - 45 players/participants and four coaches at varsity practice. We might have one other if we can get a volunteer coach/student teacher that is interested. We have about 90% of the team in last period PE in season for weights and film. Our practices are typically: Specialty 10 min, Def group 10 min (line/LB/DB),10 min Def inside(front 7/8),10 min team,5min punt/block, 10 min Off group, 10 min pass/pass block, 10 min inside,20 min team, off field.
Oh yeah, We work our #2 during inside and team periods mostly. We script 10-12 plays and run them as many times as possible in that 10 min period. When we recycle to the beginning of script we start subs to get them some work. Monday they may not get a lot of work, but it increases Tues and Wed. With a script you get more plays in than you think you would.
Coach has a great point with the script. I think it is essential in maintaining the pace of practice and thoroughly covering the bases of your game plan. Another good idea would be to specifically script your subs into your plan. You then will know exactly how many reps a player is getting.
Let me put a little different spin on the original question. We had an old coach (who knows a heck of a lot about the game, and whom I respect) say that if you can rep a play 8 times in a week you shouldn't run it in a game. I've always thought that was easier said than done. If you factor in running the play out of a few different looks, both strong and weak, with #1s and #2s, it doesn't take long before you're out of time (even if you script-which we have for years).
What do you guys think? What's your comfort level in terms of repping a play each week? For us, I feel good if we can run each play 2-3 times each way during group periods (1s get 2 reps, 2s get 1), and each play once during team periods (with a mix of 1s and 2s).
