Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
As a follow up to my last post regarding "Offensive Schemes vs. a 30 Defense", I have the same questions regarding the traditional 46 Bear. By traditional, I mean a nose in a 0 technique playing a 2-gap type technique and 2 3-tech DT's playing aggressively. They will invert a SS type over our TE and play DE types in a wide 9-techs tilted in. The ILB's are generally out in C gap. They will run a cover 3 or cover 1 man with a FS over the top who aids very aggressively in run support. If we run double TE, they generally have another safety over the other TE, giving them 7 men on the LOS. The ILB's love to play games with the TNT's, and will loop and blitz all over the place.
The reason I describe this in such detail is that I know different teams run their "46" differently.
Anyway, any type of feedback or advise will be greatly appreciated. Don't limit your comments to any particular type of offense either. Give me whatever you've got! We're multiple enough whereas if I think something will work, I'll consider it.
Also: if you are a 46 coach, what has given you headaches? What schemes do you find teams will try against you?
Lochness, We ran the bear just as you described. Just as Coach Campbell said, weakside option was a staple for anyone who new what they were doing. The other thing you may try is offsetting the back so he can get off the ball on a pass route through the C Gap. If it's man coverage, run an option route away from the defender's leverage. I saw Bill Walsh, in his second go around at Stanford, just kill a bear defense with this concept.
Also, we found teams trying to get their best receiver to the weak side (open) to get single coverage and take their shots deep, then run comeback routes. We had teams run 4 wide in order to get the SS out of the box, then run a G scheme with the Tackle coming down on the backer, the Guard kicking out the 9 tech, and the center reaching the nose (or blocking back if he was going weakside A). One of the best plays run vs . us was a compressed formation: X and Z with a short split weakside in Twins, two backs set weak, then run a weakside FB trap, with the X and Z blocking down, Weak Guard kicking out the 9, the TB running a sweep course strong to freeze the ILB. We had trouble the first time they ran it.
Good luck!
