I was thinking of the load option today when I was at school so I thought I would read over Coach Campbell's Option manual again to take a look at running Load to a 3-9 look. In the manual it says NOT to run load to a 3-9 look because the tackle and TE cannot combo away from the play.
Anyway when I was at class I saw the dilemma of having a 9 tech on the TE. So I thought to myself what could we do to block this? My idea was to release the TE inside the 9 tech to track the Sam backers. I dont think Sam would fly out on the load option because the footwork of the QB initially looks like midline even though the 3 tech would be blocked he still doesnt get a dead giveaway look like speed option. So the TE releases to Sam, C and PSG combo the 3 tech to Mike, FB loads the FS and the QB reads the 9 and you are off and running.
So what happens when the 9 tech keys the feet of the TE ? If he is a good end and crashes the TE down hard to the point where he can no longer block Sam then we have no play and we run midline. If he keys the feet and slants hard into the TE then the TE will block him, the QB will take his read outside the end to Sam who will HAVE to play over the top because the TE and DE are riding down to his feet. If Sam is in position to tackle the QB he will pitch the ball. The only problem is that you dont get a clean read because Sam is obligated to tackle the QB and he will be running downhill at the pitch back. IMO if you have a pitch back worth his salt he should be able to outrun a Sam backer who doesnt have the angle to tackle him.
Any ideas?
