Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
we are going to use the swinging gate next fall and have a few base ideas. We will have the holder count the number of defenders from the center over to the split end side, if he counts 4 we will run option, 5 we kick and 6 we will run the wedge to the gate.
What are some of the pass routes we can run out of the gate? Thanks

When we pass I have my center do an out route five yards deep in the endzone, my kicker does a swing (flare) route, and my receiver (who must line up off the line) does a flag to the corner of the endzone. I sometimes have my FB that is behind the wedge of linemen do a cross pattern at the goal line from the backside as a safety valve.
Coach Campbell and I have a complete section on the swing gate in our new manual. However, a brief recap is:
(1) - The line aligns with 1' splits at a 45 degree angle to the goal line - this allows them to down or angle block if the run "option" is chosen;
(2) - The choices include toss to run, a run / pass option, or an attempt.
(3) - The routes, outside receiver runs a cone, center a corner, the back (stacked behind the line) a flat, and the end man on the line to the middle of the goal post.
(4) - The kicker and holder run a speed option if the pass is not open
(5) - Run / Pass option if only 3 defenders aligned right; Run left if only six defenders aligned left, otherwise kick. However, if we like a match-up, we'll run one of the choices.

I noticed both you and Bill have mentioned sending your CENTER on a route. What am I missing here? I'm not familiar with the CENTER being an elgible receiver, tackle yes, but not the center. Have they changed the rules at the HS level, or am I way off base with my interpretation of the question?

Some teams when using the swinging gate will use a TE as the snapper and make sure he is not covered up in the formation, so his is an eligable receiver.

When you choose the wedge option, how do you snap it to the RB behind the line of scrimmage? I thought you had to snap it between the legs of the center?
the ball does not have to travel between the legs. Our center will have his normal stance, but if we check to the wedge the snap is tossed underhand to the centers left to the RB.

How is that accomplished? Does your center keep his feet planted and just turn his upper body to his left and flip it underhanded? Besides the accuracy of the snap what do you emphasise and drill on? It would appear to me that it would have to be the "movement speed" of the center, correct? Does he get creamed after the snap as he will be in a half upright position as he releases the ball and is fair game for the nose? I 'm never too old to want to learn new techniques that are sound. Thanks in advance for your time.

The center should not get creamed if the officials are to do their job. In a kick formation the center cannot get hit until his head pops up. You are correct on the snapping technique. Our snapper will work on this snap for 5 minutes each day in either pre or post practice. I picked up this technique from the oline coach at Univ. of Minnesota ~ Duluth. He said it could be done and he was right, it can be.

Thanks for your reply and explanation of the technique. We use NFL rules at our level, don't see a swinging gate that much. It has been since 1995 that I coached HS ball, but like to stay abreast of the techniques at all levels, as I help alot of coaches around the country. Thanks again!
