Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
I am currently reviewing, cutting up, and evaluating our offense from last season. We only saw two teams who played an odd front against us. Both teams had a head up nose and did not reduce the front to either side (we are a 3 wide team)-at least initially, giving us a 4i, 4, or 5 technique DT and a ghost 9 tech DE. I am wondering if we should alter the dive path when they leave the guard uncovered, to have it hit a little tighter. We currently coach the fullback to aim at the guard's outside leg, but vs. one of the 50 teams, they played a 4, sometimes 4i on our tackle. I thought if the diveback was hitting just a few feet closer, it would remove the QB from the dive read and give him a better chance to read the DT. Should we read the 4i DT, or just recognize it, auto pull, and pitch off the defensive end? Dive read is the 1st defender on, or outside the tackle.
Conversely, once they reduce the front to a 3 and a 5, now having the diveback aim at the tackle's inside leg seems to make sense. Now the DE is our give/pull read, we're doubling the 3 tech and chipping off to the MLB. With the veer, isn't the idea to hug the double team (inside seal) reading the next defender out? This would require you to tighten/widen the path of the FB since you're double teaming the NT versus the 50, and the 3 tech versus the reduced front. Thanks for any thoughts on these topics.

My philosophy against a 50 front (with a head up nose) is to ditch triple and run a modified midline. Generally if we see to 5 (head up tackles) techniques, they are going to slant. We will run midline to the tightend side by double teaming the nose, to eliminate the slant. We inside release the tackle to the mike, and pass set the box 9 tech. end. We simply read the slant of the tackle. If he slants to me I pull and duck into c gap, if he slants away then it's an easy give read. Against that version of the 50 we change our midline path and mesh steps to right at the gaurd. We have also had a great deal of success running a gut play. On gut we have our tackles go hard inside to cut off the slanting 5's, our guards base up the ILB's and our center catches the nose and let's him go wherever he wants. The fullbacks path is straight at the center(ala midline) and he cuts off the slant of the nose. With the 4 techniques and a nose that won't slant we try and arc block and read the 4, while basing everybody else. We have had some success running load to the TE side away from twins and pitching off of the DE.
