I got my first job coaching at the middle school by volunteering my time. Therefore, I never had to go through any kind of interview process. The head coach was happy that I was willing to help and just gave me the position. It is three years later and I am ready to move up to the high school level as an assistant. I have my first interview for an assistant Junior Varsity position coming up next week. There is a lot of information on this board about what to do when interviewing for the head job, but not much about interviewing for an assistant position. I really have no idea what to expect and would LOVE any information you fellow coaches can give me. What should I do to prepare??? What kind of questions are asked???
When I started coaching I volunteered my time and ended up with a paying high school position, I think I just got lucky. However, in my time with this staff I have sat in on a few interviews and talked with the head coach about what he is looking for. He basically wants three things from his assistants (in no particular order); loyalty to him and the program, the ability and desire to teach the kids and the ability to get along with the staff (no office turmoil). He feels and I agree that the X's and O's are secondary because a good coach can do his job within any system. Hope this helps.

Thanks claven. I feel a lot less pressure after reading your reply. All I can do is just go in and be myself. I feel I have all three of the qualities you mentioned. If I am the kind of personality that him and the staff feel comfrotable with, then I will get the offer. And if he does not feel I am the right fit, I am sure I will find the right fit with a different staff.

Be yourself coach, have some idea about the program, what they run, how successful they are, etc. Be concise and to the point when you answer questions.
