Each day containing the quarterback should be a drill incorporated into a defensive linemans daily routine. Find and maintaining his rush lane can't be emphasized enough. Example with a 4 man rush the alleys for the defensive ends would be the outside shoulder tip of the QB for the defensive tackles it would be the near ear of the QB to their side, this would be a landmark each down defender on a 4 man rush would focus on when trying to get into their proper pass rush lane. Coach, this is an excellent point. I was wondering what you teach in the way of two "finer points" of the pass rush for DE's"
1) What do you teach your DE's about penetrating upfield (to what depth). And at what point is it acceptable for a DE that has a contain rush to come "underneath the blocker".
2) Do you teach a specific technique for attacking the QB after defeating the blocker from the outside.
Coach with the DE I take them 1 yard past the Qb if being pushed and widen outside by the tackles, after reaching their landmark 1 yard past the QB then they can come back inside. Use the speed rush off the edge with a low inside shoulder reduction keeping the DE's hip as tite to the tackle's as possible, if being pushed pass the QB spin back inside. Coach CAmpbell
