Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Coach Campbell - question on the midline (freeze) trap vs. even front out of a 4 wide alignment. Versus a 3 and 5 tech on the playside, do you inside release the PG to PLB (a gap) and base out the 5 with the tackle, or would you send PG to backside LB and bring PT to PLB?
Our base rule for both tackles in our inside traps is to block the first standing LB inside. Do not block any down linemen or stunting LBs. The play should be quick enough that the first down lineman outside of the trap man will not hurt you.
So if you are in a one back, 4 wide alignment vs a 4-2 defensive front, PG vs. a 3 tech would inside release to backside LB, PT would inside release to near LB'er; center back to 1 tech; and BT inside release to backside LB'er.
Coach, Yes that is the way that we would block it. A key coaching point is for the playside Tackle to step for the butt of the 3 tech. The LB will be stepping up and if the tackle doesn't take that angle he probably will not be able to block him. It is amazing that, no matter how long you coach that angle, the tackle will still, at times, head for the LB and will get only a flipper on him as he steps up to kill the FB.
Coach - of course. The PT will at times angle toward the PLB's initial alignment, rather than anticipating his read of the play and will just graze or miss him altogether. Of course, if that PLB reads the trap well, its hard to get anything on him and he stuffs the play. How do you adjust to double 2 techs?
I don't like double 2s but will still run both the quick inside trap and the inside counter trap against it. If it is a 44 it makes it a little tougher but against a 43 its not too bad. We really don't make any adjustments and follow the same rules. I like to get the playside LB (in a 44) moving to the other side so against 2s we generally like the inside counter trap better than the straight ahead quick trap. I have messed around with an outside release and having the center block backside LB and the backside tackle scramble the 2 but most of the time we are not good enough to accomplish that. Against a 43 we have been successful with the inside counter trap with an outside release vs a 2. The Guard will outside release(sometimes pass set first) and block the first standing LB outside. The Tackle will angle to the MLB and the center will block back against the 2. If we get Mike stepping away from the trap then we got a play.
