Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Clippet Coach i would love to hear more about your wishbone offense particularly do you run outside veer to the TE side of your formation. I have been drawing it up on my pad of paper and the play looks great i worry about the angle of the fullback but i guess like in the earlier post you would have to get the fullback to turn his shoulders and get up field

newguy,
I am not the OC (I am the O-Line coach), but I have a decent understanding of the offense. Our offense is an option offense. We run other formations than wishbone. We run I, stack I, spread (flexbone), and a wing (TE side) and slot (openside) formation. but the bone has produced the best results. Running veer to the TE side is possible, but it is not as good as running it to the openside. The reason being is that you have the CB on that side probably stacked behind the DE over the TE. He will probably be blocked by the PSHB, but he might stuff the play and allow the safety to get in the alley and stop the pitch. However, in our offense we always option down lineman from head up to outside of the OT if possible. For example, this is how we would run the triple (we call it 14/15) to the TE side out of the bone vs. a 4-4 defense.
TE- Kick block on PSMB PST and PSG- Double Team DT (3 tech.) C, OSG, OST- zone FB- Dive path at outside hip of guard (4 hole) PSHB- Blocking pitch path BSHB- pitch route (he is the pitch man) QB- read DE for fullback, read SAM linebacker for pitch. SE- downfield blocking
Vs. a 5-2
TE- Arc release to SS PST- outise release and wall-off PSB PSG, OSG, OST- Zone blocking C-Base block NG SE- donwfield blocking FB- dive path to 4 hole PSHB-blockng pitch path BSHB- pitch route (pitch man) QB- read DT for FB; read DE for pitch.
In order for the bone to be effective, you have to have complimentary plays out of it. One good play to run is what we call a "blast" play. You can have blast or double blast. These plays are ISO's, but instead of the FB leading the ball carrier, he goes opposite the play, and the other halfback leads the play (on double blast the FB and PSHB lead block). You fake to the FB to the opposite side. The point of this is to get the defense thinking you are going to run the option, and gets the LB's scraping hard. Then, your QB pivots and hands to one half back while the other one is the ISO blocker. This play is set up by running a lot of option.
We also run belly plays. Fake to FB, PSHB leads through 2/3 hole, BSHB gets the ball through 4/5 hole, QB fakes the keep. You can also run belly keep. Fake both backs, QB keeps ball around the end. A "Flip" play is good if you have a speedy HB. Just turn and pitch it to the PSHB, and he tries to get outside and get the corner; good short yardage/goalline play. "Crossbuck" is another good play. It is a frontside trap. Everybody blocks down, OSG pulls and traps the man outside the 2/3 hole. FB and SSHB go to the pulling guard's side, OSHB, takes a step like he is going to get in his pitch route, and then cuts up for the dive handoff off of the trap.
Passing game: Play action passing is the best way to go. Faking to the FB gets the D to come up hard because they think it is going to be an option. Then you can hit them over the middle or deep w/ 1 on 1 coverage to the SE. Flood pass is also a good play.
That is about all I can think of right now. If you have any other questions, please let me know.
Coach thanks for the help. right now out of the wishbone we are currently running to the split end side Inside veer, counter option and Iso, To the Tight end we run power, Lead option, counter trey, inside veer... On the belly play do you read the block of the OT or do you run it as two seperate plays on being the fullback dive and the other being the lead play? thank you

When we run belly, we have three calls: belly, belly give, belly keep. We do not read the block of the OT. We double team the down defender at the P.O.A., and zone the rest. On a regular belly play, we fake the FB to the 2/3 hole, the PSHB lead through the 4/5 hole, and the BSHB gets the ball through that hole, the QB then carries out his keep fake. Ona a belly give, we just give the ball to the FB to the 2/3 hole, but still carry out the fakes to the HB and QB keep. On the Belly Keep, we fake the FB and HB, and the QB keeps the ball around the end. The key to the belly play is to execute all fakes so it keeps the defense honest to all three options.
Coach thanks for everything. Coach i have one last question what would you say are the ten basic plays of the wishbone offense. Thanks again any info would be greatly appericiated.
Well, basic plays differ on what type of offense you run from the bone. However, we are an option team, and I can give you our ten basic palys in no particular order:
1.) Midline Option 2.) Triple Option 3.) Double Option (we call it inside or outside veer) 4.) Lead Option (FB leads QB around the end, pitch off outside invert player) 5.) Belly (regular, give, keep) 6.) Blast (FB goes opposite of HB's. It is a HB lead play) 7.) Crossbuck (trap play) 8.) ISO/Double ISO 9.) Play Action Pass: 110/111, and 114/115; fake option action (Routes are pre-determined) 10.) Play Action Pass: 146/147 ISO; fake outside ISO action (routes are pre-determined)
If you need more explanation on these let me know.
This is the first year that we will run inside/outside veer. We will run it to the 6/7 hole. The reason for it is because we face more "50" defense teams than "40" defense teams. Running the midline against a straight "50" can be difficult because of how wide the DT is as to where the FB is headed, whihc is the 0/1 hole. The DT is wide enough to play both guys. So, an inside veer for us would put the FB on a path right at the DT, and he is our read. Outside veer would be to the same hole, just optioning the outside most down defender, which against a 50 would be the DE. It is a double option (FB give or QB keep). I know that most teams call their triple the inside/outside veer, but we just don't do it that way.
