Show the Numbers ?

Coach I use this term to help my offensive linemen and or any other position that requires them to roll their hips. If an offensive lineman show his numbers to the defender then it helps him roll the hips example: Sit in the chair and show your jersey numbers. Coach CAmpbell

Coach yes the showing of the numbers is the finish, this helps your offensive linemen roll their hips forward. Once the drive block has started and your offensive lineman feels the defender on his heels then show him your jersey numbers. Coach Campbell

Just when I thought it was safe to get back on the internet, TOG has infected, I mean visited, my favorite site. Good to see you here, ol' buddy. Enjoy your e-mails. Coach Campbell, I visited with you briefly at the 1st Longhorn 1 day mini-camp. Either at coaching school or before then, (maybe when the Hill Country finally dries out) I would like to pick your brain some more. As I told you in Austin, we have incorporated many of the terms you illustrate in your manual on our O-line for this year. When I taught and explained the concepts of slow and fast zones it was like a lightbulb went off in all of their heads. It was basically what we had been teaching, but said in the new way they understood it better and eventually executed much better. Can't wait to see how we actually do the 1st day in pads.

This will be my 2nd year as head coach at a 2A school here in Texas. We have been a midline and veer team from the beginning, although last year was basically from the I and this year we will be a bone and invert bone team - Small line, 2 real good halfbacks, hardnosed fullback, small, fast QB who reads it well. One of our biggest goals as a staff is to simplify things and find those 4 or 5 runs and a few different ways to throw it that work the best for us and will be workable no matter what the "D" throws at us. Running game wise - we have it covered as well as we can at this point in the year. However in the interest of simplicity I want our pass pro schemes to be as simple and similar as possible. I expect a good portion of our passing game will be play action off of veer and sprint out. Our present sprint pass pro is full gap hinge on the back side, turn back on the front side with RB responsible for EMOL. I know you are a proponent of full reach to the playside. Are there reasons for this other than you don't like the matchup of a RB vs. a D-End who is most likely going to be much bigger?

Our basic play action pass that we ran last year was off Iso action and was basically protected the same way as far as our 5 down and FB were concerned We have put in a veer play action out of the invert bone and blocked it the same way this Spring. Line does the same as above, FB comes off the mesh to EMOL, backside HB either helps out on EMOL after we have sent him in pitch motion, or picks up an outside fire if one comes. Playside halfback has a route. It looked good but it was in shorts only after all. What are your thoughts on the best ways to protect sprint out, play action and 3 step drop so that they will all mesh with each other as much as possible for simplicity sake.

Rockmoor - great to hear from you on the site it was good to see and meet you at the UT camp, that was a great week getting to be with both line coaches from UT. Coach I like to reach the sprintout game because it makes the premiter blocking much easier and whatever the 5 technique does is wrong, because the QB on his sprintout looks to the 5 technque. When the offensive tackle goes to reach two things happen. If the tackle can get the 5 technique reached then the QB stays headed outside, if the 5 technique widens then the QB oulls up inside, it becomes a moving pocket. I have the fullback track the playside LBer and the Tailback is out in a route. The footwork for the Oline is like full reach used in or outside zone scheme. We have been using the concept that Coach C describes for years with one exception. We track the 5 with both the tackle and FB. We want our QB outside and feel we can acomplish this by having two blockers attack the end. Our rules are Reach One Man - Playside Gap - Drop and Protect. The uncovered lineman usually can pick up the playside LB on a run through. If the tackle secures the 5, the FB then can turn back to wipe anything that shows. If the tackle has trouble then the FB usually can be in position to keep the 5 inside. Having said this, if the 5 comes across hard and boxes, our QB does know to pull up. Usually, however, this does not happen.
We did change our rules based on Coach C's recommendation. We used to teach "Playside Gap - On - Drop and Protect. We now reach a full man. I was hesitant at first but it can be done.
