have any of you guys seen jim mcnally speak or one of his clinic tapes recently? there are a coupl of things on there technique wise that i have not seen before, or have always heard different
1st-their combo steps, the drop step with their far foot then straight step with their near foot-he says it gives them better leverage and that the strength is then under the defender because that is the leg that is bent more, now after seeing this demonstrated on tape it looks good, it is just so strange to me though, having always been taught the more conventional way of slide step, or 45degree zone step with the near foot--what yall think about the idea? is it just becuase he has pro linemen that can move at that size? or could this tech work for hs kids?
2nd-on the counter-he advocates that the pulling guard aim at the outside of the emol.. he says that this widens the hole and allows the back and the pulling tackle to make a cut in or out off of the block depending on what the emol defender does..he likes this a lot better than trapping the guy by getting your head upfield in the conventional way so the defender will not be able to roll back out and make the play-this tech seems to make more sense to me than the combo tech mentioned above,, i am beginning to think that this might be a good idea for ends that are digging out real good-to just log them instead of making them pay for it and hoping that by the 3rd and 4th quater that they will cut it out-i guess it also depends on what kind of counter you are running-inside or counter sweep-but either way you have to adjust on the run and he advocates that it is easier to stay on the line and aim out and then adjust back in for the digout than it is to aim downfield and then have to adjust to the slow play kind of end
3-this one is not as strange to me, as it is how i learned to do it-again on the combo block (zone double team) he advocates the use of one arm/shoulder/flipper with each ol to the nearside of the dl, and this is what i was taught, he thinks this gives you a better chance to go through the guy instead of around the guy, we are now using the four hands and four eyes to the backside lbr tech and i am worried about walking around the block because the ol shoulders would be turned getting both hands on near nipple, we have drills to work on this, but i am thinking about going back to the one arm free tech to prevent walking around with certain of my guys- what do you use? and why
mcnally is a good caoch and an effective teacher-i really enjoyed learning some new (if unusual to me) stuff about the ol
