Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Coaches, for those of you that are running triple option from the Gun with two backs, what is the footwork used by the QB for the Crazy Option? Seems like the QB would shuffle side to side, with small steps, while reading the end, with the dive back coming underneath for the potential shovel pass. What is the footwork like for your QB and what do you teach them? Thanks Coaches,
We have the Qb slide, with his shoulders square to the line. His outside foot goes first, then his inside foot. When his inside foot hits, its decision time. If the end comes upfield, he shovels the ball to the fullback. If the end squeezes, the QB turns his shoulders to a 45 and attacks the next man for his pitch read to the TB. We call this slide option to remind the QB to slide. He doens't have to slide too quick. We want an under control slide.
Coach, thank you. What types of reactions to do you typically see from the end.... does he typically run straight up to the QB, try to stop and play both the QB and FB? I would think a HS backside end would get pretty excited seeing the QB just sitting out there all by himself and want to rip his head off.
Is this an option you can run several times during a game, or does the defense get used to it and start to play games with it after a while and diminish its effectiveness?
Typically, he hesitates because he is not used to seeing the QB looking at him with the football. We see the DE hesitate and attack the QB. By midseason, our opponents will vary in how they play the crazy option. We will see the end sqeeze, and we will see the end play to the QB. We work every scenario in practice.
I'm looking at going to the triple option in gun. I've read a couple of coaches talking about crazy option. What is it? This is the first time on this site so forgive me if I sound unprepared.
Coach, The way we run the crazy option from the gun is to have your backs beside your QB or motion to into that position on the snap. We have our QB attack the DE. One back is in a pitch relationship to the outside The other back has an inside route looking for a Shovel pass. We will say we are going to the left. The QB reads the DE if he attacks inside the QB we have the QB run normal normal pitch option to the perimeter, if the DE attacks the outside of QB we shovel pass to the back that was lined up on the QB's right side and his path is off the left tackle.
Fun play for the players
