If an offense likes to make a habit of running the Toss or Pitch play the 4-3 scheme with cover 2 supports the perimeter well and usually forces the ball back inside. Coach CAmpbell
Personally, I do not like to depend on Cover 2 to defend any run play, not even a perimeter run play. I would much rather be in Cover 4 to defend the toss.
Coach, I agree, we love cover 4 versus run teams. Our safties are the invert players versus what they see from the offense. Other coaches do not think our safties can make tackles from 10 yards depth. If you stand 10 yards off the l.o.s, then come down hill when your read tells you run, you will find that you, like our safties will blow up sweeps etc.. at the l.o.s and or behind the l.o.s. Our safties each year either lead the team in tackles or second on the team. Cover 4 does not mean pass all the time. Then pro's and college teams would not run it. Cover 4 gives you a 9 man box. I believe it is one of the only defenses that do that. We do mix in cover 2 so offense do not always know who our force player is. I also think the angle of our safties versus ISO, Power, Trap, Counter, Reverse are the best angles you can get.. But thats why I am a cover 4 guy. I do not stand a chance trying to explain this to cover 3 guys.
