Is the inside zone play from the 1 back worth the time invested to teach it? I have been very intrigued the past two years to give the zone a shot but I just can't seam to pull the trigger on it and I've heard from many people that it takes a ton of reps to get it down and that your running back better have great vision. I'm very comfortable with the ISO and trap but to have a straight ahead running game against a team that dosen't penetrate (for the trap) I feel a little handcuffed with the ISO because we have to Pull a tackle or H-back unless we want to run the QB ISO to have a straight ahead running game out of the 1 back. I'm not talking about Off Tackle with the Power and counter, I'm talking about hitting the A and B gaps.
How much practice time would you say it takes, exactly? I am tinkering with putting in an inside, outside, and zone toss play this season to compliment a running game I would otherwise categorize as "Power" and "3 points of attack" in most cases. We already are stretched for time because we spend a great deal of time repping the heck out of the passing game. We only throw the ball 30% of the time, but we want to do it well (60% completions last season.). I don't want to take away from the passing reps and the perfection of our power game too much, but it hurts us to not have zone schemes when we go to 1 back.
