Coach,
We run very few blocking schemes, but marry a number of different backfield actions to a few schemes. This way, our undersized line can really get to know their techniques well, since mentally the game is simplified. We are a shotgun, 3 WR, 2 back team, but utilize our FB as an H-back type (motioning, pulling, kicking, etc.), and we split out our TB often.
Our run blocking schemes consist of:
1. Inside Zone: (we also run quick pitch if our tackle can reach the 5)
2. Chip:
PT-Chip Down working to Mike
PG- Chip Down
C-Block Back
BG-Pull and Hug the double
BT-Gap Step and Hinge
3. Trap
4. Draw
5. Base
Our run package is greatly enhanced by our passing game, and by the use of multiple sets and motioning. We also use simple tags such as 'Trade' for our Chip Series which tells the guard he will be kicking the end, not hugging.
We run four different plays from zone, 12 from Chip, 2 from trap, 2 from draw, and 2 from Base.
Against 50's and 4-3's we have no issues, but my DC got a little ingenius and came up with this.
He plays a 4i and a 7 to the strong side with a Sam outside. Against us, the 7 bumps to a 5 if our FB isn't at a wing spot. (This is a 4-3 to the strong side.
Then He plays a 50 to the weak side, with a head up nose, a head up 4-tech, a Will moved to a 9 (walked up), and the Mike right over the Guard (In the Bubble). We have a smallish line, and his D-Line is big and athletic (he gets first pick!).
We normally have no issues running on them, except we can't CHIP to the 3-tech, because we never get to the Mike in the 4-3 look. We just take care of that by setting the FB as a wing, which allows me to dictate which side has the 3, then we motion the FB in all sorts of ways.
Unfortunately this new look leaves me stumped. I was wondering if you could help me with a scheme that would help us vs. this look. I'm glad we have this guy, and our opponents don't. I will come up with the backfield actions, if you could help with the blocking scheme.
Thanks Coach!
